Helpful tests for essential oil purity

Color: 100% Peppermint (Mentha Piperita) Essential Oil

I have not come across a pure peppermint essential oil that I don't like, and I have not come across an Art Naturals product that I don't like (although I do like some more than others). This one is no exception. I love it that this is the first time I see a peppermint EO package directly says it is for treating mice and spider problems. See the first picture. I don't know anything about mice problem, but peppermint EO is effective against spiders.

It is a habit of mine that before I review a product, I read other people's reviews, especially the negative ones - just to make sure I know if I've been had. This Art Naturals bottle has quite a few reviews, and understandably there are a small number of negative reviews. Most of these negative reviews complained about the oil being impure or fake. I am no expert in this matter - I don't own a mass spectrometer or a gas chromatography machine - but I think I am more qualified than most normal users to make a judgement. The reason is that I have been using peppermint oil (and others) for years, and I currently own 4 other bottles of peppermint essential oil. Three of them were bought from different brands on Amazon, and another was bought directly from a famous wholesaler with a long history of selling essential oils. I have been buying EO from them for 15 years, and have never been disappointed. The point is, I have sampled enough peppermint oil through the years to know a fake or a watered down version (the proper term is "extended") when I smell one, and I did run into a few in the past. This oil is not a fake. People need to remember that essential oils come from plants, and one bottle may smell a little different than another, even if they are from the same label but from different batch, different processing facility, different harvest, or different farms. So don't be so quick to dismiss your EO as a fake just because it doesn't smell exactly like the one you are familiar with.

As for whether this oil is adulterated/extended with carrier oil, you can easily tell. A simple sniff usually does the trick, because if the EO is extended with carrier oil it would smell much more muted, or even smell oily - remember, your essential oil is not really an "oil" which usually means a fatty acid. The other easy way, but not as immediate as a sniff test, is to put a drop on a tissue and let the oil slowly evaporate. If it contains impurities - including carrier oils because they are fatty acids and do not evaporate like EOs do - you will see a color ring - usually pale yellow or brown - around the dried blotch where the EO used to be. Lastly, you can put the EO in your diffuser and run it till dry. The carrier oil will not be diffused into the air, and what's left on the bottom of the diffuser's reservoir will be slick (oil) or even sticky (resin), especially after a few runs. I haven't put this Art Naturals oil to the diffuser test yet, but I did perform the tissue drop test. Look at the attached before and after pictures. The second picture is the close up taken an hour after the initial drop. There is no colored ring around the blotch.

What else can I say about this bottle? It smells a little sweeter than the other bottles I have. Again, that's a natural variation and does not say anything about whether one brand is better than another. If you were like me, you will like them all.

I got this oil to ward off the mice we had living behind our stove and in our shed. I put together a water/peppermint oil mixture in a spray bottle, sprayed the areas, and haven't seen any critters since. I would recommend spraying this periodically, as the scent will wear off, but so far it's worked. The smell is a little bit strong at first, but you get used to it, and the smell is quite relaxing. We also used this in our garden to ward off critters, and it worked for that too. Great alternative to pesticides, mouse traps, and inhumane pest control.

I am elderly and have problems with my sinuses whether due to my age or major allergies. The heated Eucalyptus oil fills the air and gently opens my sinuses. Sinus sprays are too harsh and destroy the lining in my nose. This product has proven to be effective without being destructive. FYI - I did not receive any incentives for this review.

Got more than I expected with this order, so how do I not give 5 stars? In addition to the peppermint bottle I ordered, I received a dropper (sorry, I removed it before snapping my photo) and two small bottles of compatible essential oil flavors in .3 sizes. And all in a nicely packaged little box. This would be an ideal gift for that person who likes essential oils, especially with the holidays coming up. The flavor seems strong, unlike a bottle of pine which I purchased in a different brand. Art Naturals seems to understand the business advice, "Promise less. Give more."

Shipping was fast and the package arrived without damage. I'm a huge Essential Oil expert. I study it like it's one of my college books. I love the fresh, crisp scent of 100% Pure Essential Oil. Unfortunately, it's extremely hard to find a company that actually provides 100% Pure Essential Oils. So I'm always on the look out for trustworthy companies to buy my oils from. That being said......I like the scent. It's not as potent as some of the other Peppermint essential oils on the market however, it passed my numerous essential oil tests. I use it in my diffuser, shampoo (add a few drops to shampoo), and bug spray. I appreciate the handy dropper and the care the company took in mailing me my package. I would recommend this seller. I will *NOT* be ordering this product again. This second batch was HORRIBLE! It does not smell like tea tree oil at all, but like something rancid and toxic. As other reviewers have noted, it smells like Pinesol -- only worse. The smell literally nauseates me. Needless to say, I will not be using this. I don't know if this bottle contains expired oil, or some other substance altogether -- but as a paying customer it's not my job to figure that out. All I know is that I will now be seeking a new supplier of tea tree oil. Sorry, ArtNaturals, you screwed up royally and lost this customer's trust.

I have a diffuser that runs all day & another in my sons room for at night. I hate how quickly I finish the small .33 oz bottles & not to mention the cost.. I love that these bottles are 4 oz & come with droppers. They are not the best but for the price I paid I wasn't expecting top of the line. I do need an extra drop or two compared to other brands, but again you just can't beat the price. Plus I know these bottles will last me a while. Despite not being as potent as others, they still are fragrant. I like to mix 2:1 lavender & peppermint in my diffuser.
