I love fantasy. Have read and re-read Harry Potter countless times. But I am by no means unable to enjoy reading other fantasy books. I loved the Bartimaeus trilogy and then someone told me about this series and I jumped right in. This being the 1st series in the novel, was a great read. I am not giving it 5 stars. The 1st book of most series aren't necessarily the best. You get to know the basic plot and characters of the series and hopefully the following books will build on this even better. Artemis character is very very interesting. As is Butler and Holly. For those of you with active imagination, you won't find it hard to visualize the "people". It is a book about a 12 yr old but certainly not limited to readers of that age. I am excited about this series and I recommend it for people who are looking for a new fantasy series to read. This one is different from Harry Potter because half of it is set in our world with normal people. Artemis is a genius but posseses no magic or superpowers . The writing is lucid and very easy to read. The book is absorbing, couldn't stop turning the pages. Seems less emotionally intense than Harry Potter, but that's not a bad thing at all.

This was a fun fast read. I enjoyed Colfer's confident writing style. Artemis was a very intriguing protagonist and I'd definitely pick up the next one in this series. The plot was well done and the pacing was electrifying. I couldn't wait to see how it all turned out. A great read.

I was hesitant to start this series. I read several different descriptions and reviews, but the fairy thing kept me at bay. Then I just happened to watch the Prep and Landing Christmas special. It made the whole thing seem more bearable. So I started to read and couldn't stop. All of the characters are entertaining. The arrogant and superior thoughts of Artemis Fowl was one of the best aspects. He always seems to be one step ahead of everyone, and even though he is doing wrong, he can't help but root for him. His internal conflict about doing wrong keeps you hopeful that he is not all bad and will someday change. This is a great start to the series, and having got into the other books, I can say that it keeps getting better.

I finally took the time to read this book. I've heard of the series for a long time but never read it. I found the book very entertaining and am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Criminal mastermind Artemis gets everyone's attention with his way of doing the unthinkable. Who else has kidnapped a fairy and ransomed her for fairy gold?

Throughout this series, Artemis turns from villain to . . . well . . . a villain who helps the fairies. I love how EC has Artemis thinking five steps ahead of the reader, and three steps ahead of his enemies. Artemis and Ender might be the only two book characters to convince me they were geniuses.

Artemis Fowl is an exteremely good book series. The characters are unique and memorable, and the plots are too suspenseful to stop reading. Eoin Colfer's writing is vivid, and mixes drama and comedy in just the right amounts. Artemis himself is often criticized as "evil". Part of the storyine in the series is Artemis's struggle with his own greed, inherited from generation of Fowl criminal masterminds, a struggle which he finally wins at the end of the third book (there was a slight relapse during the fourth book due ot a mind-wipe, but that dosen't count). Artemis has also been compared to Harry Potter, which makes no sense at all as they are not even remotely alike. As a matter of fact, Artemis is like no other book character I've seen. To quote the first book of the series, "Some said Artemis was a chip of the old block; they were wrong. Artemis was a brand-new block, the likes of which had never been seen before."

I would recommend this series to anyone who likes fantasy series.

Ok, I have never seen so many reviews for one book (900?!?!?!) so I'll be brief:

Good book. Worth the read- certainly suitable for young adults.
I LOVED the sections that focused on the faeries.
I don't really have to say more great stuff. I'm sure it's all been said.

Couple issues I had:

- It was clearly a series opener as there was a little lack of focus. There were other story lines being set up throughout this one.

- I found myself torn and a bit confused as to who to route for. I struggled with Artemis' lack of morality. I wasn't ready to see him win in the end. Was I hoping he would get bamboozled by the faeries? Did I want him to win back the family fortune? Not really sure- I didn't warm up to him as much as perhaps others do.

I'll read the next book because I'm hoping I'll get to know Arty better, but I found I was far more drawn to the other characters. Artemis was a bit too amoral and arrogant to win my affection the first time around. Though the couple times he cracked and acted like a real boy, I found it charming.

I have never read a book of Eoin Colfer's that didn't impress me; his characters, his wit, and his plots are always excellent. The Artemis Fowl series, however, is Colfer at his best. The story begins with Artemis, a 12 year old Irish millionaire with a genius for crime, ruthlessly pursuing his plot to steal fairy gold. Helping Artemis is his bodyguard, Butler, who is possibly my favorite fictional character of all time. Fighting, cooking, obtaining false papers--you name it, Butler is on top of it. Together, these two kidnap a fairy to hold for ransom. Unfortunately for them, the fairy they capture is Captain Holly Short, of the Lower Elements Police Reconnaissance squad (that's LEPrecon for short). Holly has a few tricks of her own up her sleeve (or down her boot). Nor are Holly's friends back at LEP headquarters to be overlooked. Foaly, the wisecracking centaur, commands technology that's decades ahead of any competition, and Julius Root, the politically incorrect LEP commander, will stop time itself to get his officer back. So are they too much for Artemis? He doesn't think so. With combatants like this, there's no predicting what will happen. And the series only gets better from here!

Again, a nefarious plan-fomenting child makes his way onto my list of favorites. Please do not think I have a penchant for evil-spirited children. I most certainly do not, but I do find that their shenanigans are often some of the most entertaining to read. In the world of precocious children, Artemis Fowl may perhaps take the cake as the most precocious of them all. He is a criminal mastermind who globe-trots in a world of theft, elves, and international (and interspecies) conspiracies, accompanied at all times by his ubiquitous "sidekick"/faux-parental-figure Butler (who is, non- ironically, actually his butler). Yes - I said elves. There is a very fun world-beneath-the-world layer to these stories that is witty and punny and sure to entertain (the elven-secret police are called LEPrecon, teehee).

This is a series that has interested me for years, but I'm just getting around to reading the first in the series. I'm by no means a child, but I found this book to be very entertaining. I thought Colfer did a nice job of portraying fairies, trolls and dwarves in very inventive ways. The plot was quick moving, and the characters were not caricatures or cardboard cutouts. One thing I didn't expect was Artemis is by far the least appealing character to me. I liked all the fairy folk and even those on Fowl's side of the difficulties more than him, but I'm not sure what else I expected from a 12-year-old criminal mastermind. I liked this book greatly and will definitely continue on in the series.
