Cenk Sönmezsoy (pronounced jenk sun-mass-soy) is an author, blogger, photographer, and food stylist based in Istanbul. After graduating from college, he moved to San Francisco, where he earned an MBA from the University of San Francisco and worked at a high-tech PR agency. On realizing that he’d rather eat glass than sit through another client conference call discussing another “groundbreaking” product, he returned to Istanbul. There, in 2006, he started a food blog that grew bigger and faster than he ever could have imagined. Published both in English and Turkish, Cafe Fernando (cafefernando.com) has been cited as one of the “World’s 50 Best Food Blogs” by The Times of London. Saveur named it “Best Culinary Travel Blog” in 2010, and the following year awarded the brownies he designed for Dolce & Gabbana “Best Original Baking and Desserts Recipe.” In 2012, Saveur called the piece Cenk wrote about his dining experience at Chez Panisse the year’s “Best Piece of Culinary Writing.” He ditched the corporate world in 2010 and began work on his first cookbook. His Turkish cookbook, "Cafe Fernando–Bir pasta yaptım, yanağını dayar uyursun", published in June 2014, became an instant bestseller and was awarded “Best in the World—First Place” in the Blogger category at the 2015 Gourmand World Cookbook Awards and first place at Gourmand’s “Best of the Best.” The English-language version of his book, "The Artful Baker: Extraordinary Recipes From an Obsessive Home Baker", was published by Abrams on October 17, 2017.

This is a gorgeous book with recipes that truly taste as good as it looks. I am a home baker and I recently joined an online baking group where this book was chosen as the book of the month. I felt compelled to make as many things as I could because every picture in the book is absolutely stunning and it draws you in.

The pictures of what I’ve made are the recipes called the Devil Wears Chocolate, Triple Raspberry & Lemon Birthday Cake, Brownie Wears Lace, Raspberry Jewel Pluot Galette, Roasted Strawberry Ice Cream, Blackberry Swirl Frozen Yogurt, and Chocolate Chip Cookies.

All the recipes are clear, detailed and concise. I can tell that every recipe was well thought out and well tested. Everything I made turned out wonderfully and was delicious. Although the month has ended for the book club, I’m going to continue making things from the book because of how much I love it.

I have tried to avoid buying more cookbooks but when I read the comments and feedback from fellow baker’s on Food52 Baking Cookbook Club’s FB page when this was the September selection, I could not resist. Cenk’s entire presentation -from his story to the clearly written recipes to his photography - is exquisite. So far I have made the strawberry ice cream, confit tomato pesto tart and the chocolate Bundt. cake. His recipes do take time but the results are well worth it. Thank you for such a quality cookbook. P.S. as a San Franciscan I loved your local shots!

I am so amazed by this book because the recipes are a little different than what you typically find. I immediately made the pistachio crumb cake. Most people don't have pistachio flour on hand. But you can easily grind unsalted pistachios (or any unsalted nuts) in a mini food processor. The result is absolutely delicious. What I love most is that, grams, onces and cups are used so you can pick which one your comfortable with. Enabling you to easily downsize or increase a recipe easily. Unique flavor combinations have me so excited.
The book is beautifuly photographed. The recipes are easy to follow. I can't wait to bake even more out of the book.
