The beginning was a little bit slow and it takes a while to get accustomed to the new Universe but once things start to click
after a few chapters, you will start to become absorbed. The action scenes are very exciting and reminds me of watching a
crazy Dragon Ball Z fight that keeps you hooked until the fight ends. Good mixture of fighting and plot development.
Happily I was not let down in the least. Chris Eisenlauer really delivered a great wire-fu chop-saki science fiction powerhouse in The Artifact Companion.
As others have mentioned blast through the beginning. It's confusing and irrelevant. The story settles fast after a couple chapters. This world might be in an adjoining dimension. There seems to be some interaction and makes me wonder about future books.
This a sad brutal world at times, being a society that conquers all that it sees and moves on to the next target. The tournament takes place during a lull when the empire is rebuilding. There even is a botanical flavor to the method of travel and the structure of the empire itself. Some really good ideas going on here.
Good story that caught my interest with plenty left to explain or expand on if the author decides to.
