Sort of, kind of. Here we have a heroine brutalized as a young girl and saved by her maternal grandparents. Our heroine Cara grows into an independent woman during the Victorian Age. However this age is abundant with Steampunk Technology. Wonderful mechanicals running on steam power. We even have lighter than air Sky ships in this universe. And it is a delightful universe. Cara is independent , and her partner Nate is her polar opposite. Together as Yin/Yang we learn their stories as they go about battling artifacts powers and overcoming them, and finally storing them away in a warehouse.
The characters we meet are well developed as characters go. We learn plenty about their wants, their needs, and their goals in life.
Oh, there's quite a bit of torrid sexcapades going on too. Cara and Nate have sex, lots of sex. Though only a few parts are really descriptive, I wouldn't recommend these books to youngish children. For teens? Older ones I think would be best.
These books are in their own way LGBTQ friendly too. A Gay character does appear, and he's treated as everyone else. It's even hinted that our dearest Nate tried it with his best buddy Lachlan or Loki as he's known.
I don't want to give much away, but I do recommend them for an enjoyable lighter read. At least I enjoyed them, though one artifact per book makes it rather slow going.
Also, each book is a standalone novel. And the last novel in this set indicated there will be more to come. I'll be waiting.....
This is great fun! I was especially pleased to to discover that the author succeeded in maintaining each of the main characters through all four books.
As a retired English teacher, I am very sensitive to misspellings and to the use of the wrong word. I could only find one or two errors in four-plus books...in an e!ectronic publication. I heartily recommend this book
