About the Author
Dr. Roman V. Yampolskiy is a Tenured Associate Professor in the department of Computer Engineering and Computer Science at the Speed School of Engineering, University of Louisville. He is the founding and current director of the Cyber Security Lab and an author of many books including Artificial Superintelligence: a Futuristic Approach. During his tenure at UofL, Dr. Yampolskiy has been recognized as: Distinguished Teaching Professor, Professor of the Year, Faculty Favorite, Top 4 Faculty, Leader in Engineering Education, Top 10 of Online College Professor of the Year, and Outstanding Early Career in Education award winner among many other honors and distinctions. Yampolskiy is a Senior member of IEEE and AGI; Member of Kentucky Academy of Science, former Research Advisor for MIRI and Associate of GCRI.
Dr. Yampolskiy’s main areas of interest are AI Safety, Artificial Intelligence, Behavioral Biometrics, Cybersecurity, Genetic Algorithms, and Pattern Recognition. Several textbooks are written by one or two authors, limiting the perspectives on the topic covered. AI safety is a very new field, where much of the foundations have not been settled. Thus, Roman Yampolskiy, the editor of the book, has made the wise decision to construct the first textbook on AI safety by seeking chapters by a diverse set of luminaries and experts who often disagree with one another. For example, consider two chapter contributors, Bill Joy and Ray Kurzweil. Bill Joy, a co-founder of Sun Microsystems, wrote "Why the Future Doesn't Need Us", while Ray Kurzweil, director of engineering at Google, once co-wrote "Transcend: Nine Steps to Living Well Forever".
The book is multi- and interdisciplinary, drawing expertise from biology, computer science, history, international relations, mathematics, philosophy, physics, political science, psychology, and many other fields. Additionally, each chapter is self contained and designed to be readable by non-experts.
