This almost bordered on obsession but there was still a connection. While it kept me engrossed it also frustrated me. I understand different levels of link but, and this is a big but, I didn't understand the need to sharing Saskia. Yes, the decision was hers but was it really? Would she have done this if she wasn't in the predicament that she was in? It's not like she was heading to a private club signing up for these things. It was a fine line. I think she wanted to please her Master but feel down she wanted this connection and approval. That is where I really struggled with the story.
I had thought the story was building to that point since Lachlan had trust issues. Yet, I was left puzzled. Add in Marcus and it was even more confusing as I didn't know what was coming in regards to the motivations and dynamics between the characters. Knowing that the next book only has them as a secondary story also has me a little uneasy. There is still so much I need to know before it can be resolved. I'll trust the author though to because she really did write an amazing story.
Still a solid book. I will be continuing on with the story but feel the need to advise anyone reading this that there is a lot left in the story to be told. The steam was hot, the mind games were on par for this author, and the anticipation was definitely there. I might be in the minority with my review but I just wanted something more. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the next book gives them to me.
This book will tease you and seduce you taking you down a rabbit hole you’re not sure you can climb back out of, not sure if you even want to try. In the best possible way *wink*
I highly recommend this book to those who are new to Kitty, who love Kitty, who are fans of dark romance. Kitty never disappoints! I am eagerly awaiting her next book, The Escape Artist!
Saskia Roth, the epitome of the starving artist, is contracted to do just that - but she doesn't think Lachlan Niche deserves the Joseph Quill original, so she takes his money, gives him her near perfect forgery, and runs. She literally flees the country with his millions and travels the world.
However, she can't hide from Lachlan, no matter where she goes. He hunts her down and captures her, giving her an ultimatum: she can become his slave and work off her debt to him while he ignores the fact she gave him a forgery or he can call the police. She chooses slavery and soon discovers that Lachlan is much more than the tech tycoon he seems.
In THE CON ARTIST, Kitty Thomas paints a vivid world with her words, bringing to life the absolute despair Saskia feels as she gives herself over to the man she discovers has more secrets than she can count. Lachlan has what some would call depraved desires, subjecting Saskia to his sadistic attentions, bringing her to tears for his own pleasure time and time again. Between his ministrations, Lachlan tutors Saskia in her art so she can work off part of the millions she owes him by painting and selling original artwork - something she hasn't had a passion for in a long time. Being an avid artist himself, Lachlan sees the talent locked inside Saskia and knows how to bring it out of her.
The dynamic between Saskia and Lachlan is visceral and leaves the reader aching - be it for more, to be in Saskia's place, or for a momentary reprieve. Kitty's mastery of the imagery in THE CON ARTIST is beyond reproach and left me breathless at times. This is every bit a story about art as it is about love; just as art is definable by the artist and the viewer, so is the love depicted within definable by the author and the reader. Saskia and Lachlan share a connection over their art and in their Master/slave relationship, and through both, a form love and trust develops. Though THE CON ARTIST is a standalone tale, the relationship between Saskia and Lachlan is only just beginning, and there is, in the end of the book, hope burning in Saskia, as well as a cracking of Lachlan's hardened shell of a heart, hinting at their own form of "happily ever after".
Fans of Kitty Thomas will find everything they have come to love in her works in THE CON ARTIST. There are also scenes of public play, male/male, and ménage; just like with any Kitty Thomas book, these scenes are not gratuitous - they build the characters and give an insight into the relationships within the world she has built. In all, THE CON ARTIST is a beautiful addition to the reader's bookshelf and a unique introduction for those that have not read Kitty Thomas' other works.

Saskia decides on a con that will eventually give her, her hearts desire. She just doesn’t understand yet, as she is being a bit distracted by her guilt.
Quill is a complicated character, but utterly magnificent. Really can’t say much more without spoilers, but suffice to say that once again Ms Thomas has delivered an intelligent story with the appropriate amount of filth. The characters will all draw you in and keep you guessing.
If you are a little bit curious I recommend you take the leap and read this book. What is the worst that can happen!
Read this and weep or squirm.
