But – while I own at least 40 titles entirely devoted to Photoshop, I must say this one ranks among the top five as far as creativity and fantasy go. The author is a professional photographer, and it shows; but he also has a painterly ideal of color and light which really brings a difference to his images. This is not a recipe book: it won't give you water-proof instructions on how to achieve this or that effect. It's more like a think-tank, where even relatively difficult concepts like the Lab color structure are explained plainly and simply; a truly no-nonsense book. Neatly divided in chapters targeting specialized techniques, it shows you a way, and then you decide where you want to go and, most of all, how far you want to reach out. Some techniques are subtle, some can only be labeled as extreme, but they're always surprising and sometimes not as obvious as you may expect.
Highly recommended to photographers who love post-production and want to check out a beautiful and open-minded approach to the wonderful world of color and photomanipulation.
Russell shows and explains techniques not normally found in other books, such as Lab Color Space, Focus Stacking, Blend If, and the application of Texture overlays, just to name a few.
His approach is easy and straight forward, and as he states at the beginning of the book "I wont be holding your hand" ..............
I applaud his decision! So If you're a person who wants or needs their hand held while learning new ideas, then this book may not be for you, but if you're wanting to learn much more than the same old re-hashed ideas found in most books, more importantly, your moneys worth, you're in luck.
