My experience buying this product
-Arrived on time
-Is the right texture of paper for what I want to do
-is the right size for what I want to do
-is basically exactly what I wanted at face value
-A few of the corners right out of the package were bent-this is irritating as I like to use the whole page, and I make enough mistakes and wrinkles on my own without the paper starting damaged. I'm pretty sure this happened before packaging and shipping. the books came shrink wrapped and in a well fitted box, and the wrinkles don't look like they would have happened from bouncing around in a box.
-the papers don't all line up. I have worked at a bindery before, and let me tell you, the way the paper does not line up when the book is closed is unacceptable.
-not a big deal, but further evidence of poor quality is that there were a couple stains on the back of both sketchbooks.
-The perforations for easy tear are such that the pages actually stick together at the perforations and have to be carefully separated or torn out of the sketchbook.
Honestly, if it was just one of those things in the cons list, I could deal, but altogether it screams low quality. The biggest problem is the way the papers line up poorly, if I put this in my back pack it'll tear up the ones that are sticking out real quick. I included a few pictures so you can decide for yourself. Please excuse the messy background.
For the price, these are alight. I ripped out a few pages and it's fitting together better when closed. I'm keeping the 2 star rating though, because of the poor craftsmanship, and because I am led to believe that the low price is temporary. If I had to pay the full price on these, and were to get this quality of sketchbooks, I would probably return them.
9-26-2016 has held fairly well in my travels, paper is still exactly what I wanted. the more papers i remove from the notebooks, the better the notebook closes. changed to 3 star rating.
10-12-2016 bought a new set and they did not come with the previous problems. no problems with them whatsoever actually. perfect condition.
Drawings step by step via YouTube by Mark Crilley. I never do exact copies and no proper measurements but it's very easy to follow along.
The perforation is some of the best I've ever seen or used, and I appreciated the obviously well-crafted spiral binding and thick, heavy covers on the front and back.
The sketchbook is comprised of thin textured paper. Its intended use seems to be pencil, charcoal, and some light inks. It is NOT appropriate for paint, pastels, or colored pencils.
While the paper has tooth it has no give. Regardless of how many layers of graphite you lay into the paper the little bumps will make all your sketches have a weird texture.
If you are a student that took an art class to bump up your GPA and just want something cheap go for it.
If you are any sort of artist I'd advise you to look elsewhere.
I was very satisfied when I first used this sketchbook! The pages are smooth and I personally love spiral bound books, and it was a two for one deal! My only issues were that the paper wasn't a crisp white color and that it was very thin. You can see through it and onto the next drawing-I used pencils and charcoal as art mediums with this book.
