"THE ARTIST'S WAY by Julia Cameron is not exclusively about writing--it is about discovering and developing the artist within whether a painter, poet, screenwriter or musician--but it is a "lot" about writing. If you have always wanted to pursue a creative dream, have always wanted to play and create with words or paints, this book will gently get you started and help you learn all kinds of paying-attention techniques; and that, after all, is what being an artist is all about. It's about learning to pay attention."
--Anne Lamott, Mademoiselle
"The premise of the book is that creativity and spirituality are the same thing, they come from the same place. And we were created to use this life to express our individuality, and that over the course of a lifetime that gets beaten out of us. [THE ARTIST'S WAY] helped me put aside my fear and not worry about whether the record would be commercial."
--Grammy award-winning singer Kathy Mattea
"Julia Cameron brings creativity and spirituality together with the same kind of step-by-step wisdom that Edgar Cayce encouraged. The result is spiritual creativity as a consistent and nourishing part of daily life."
"I never knew I was a visual artist until I read Julia Cameron's THE ARTIST'S WAY."
--Jannene Behl in Artist's Magazine
"Julia Cameron's landmark book THE ARTIST'S WAY helped me figure out who I really was as an adult, not so much as an artist but as a person. And award-winning journalist and poet, Cameron's genius is that she doesn't tell readers what they should do to achieve or who they should be--instead she creates a map for readers to start exploring these questions themselves."
--Michael F. Melcher, Law Practice magazine
"This is not a self-help book in the normative sense. It is simply a powerful book that can challenge one to move into an entirely different state of personal expression and growth."
--Nick Maddox, Deland Beacon

On a personal level the book format seems kinda ugly and doesn't appeal to me. I do like the morning pages journal workbook by the same author. It's bound like a typical book, but it's more aesthetically appealing, and the pages are lined. I don't have any problems writing in it so far, though some people have complained.
I think you get a much fuller understanding if you get the "The Artists Way" itself rather than just the workbook. I looked at the workbook and was like, ok exercises, what about them?
I don't see why this is made into a kindle edition. I actually downloaded it to my iphone out of curiosity. You can take notes in the kindle app, but you can't see the notes and the exercise at the same time, and obviously it's kind of cramped (at least on the iphone); plus I'm not sure of any privacy issues with your notes. You can't write on the contract page at all, it appears to be scanned in as an image? I think the author prefers that you work in long hand anyway. So it's probably better just to write on your own paper.
I shared this experience with my dearest and longest friend, who is on the East Coast and now she is starting an Artists Way group there. I look forward to phone or skype discussions, so onward we go..................
I bought the audio version and listened to it all the way through in a week. I got done, and felt so much better! I loved it! Then I bought this workbook.
I'm slowly working my way through the workbook. It's a bit challenging, but I'm pushing through, and definitely feeling so much more creative. My life is opening up in new & unexpected ways & I can't wait to see where I end up. I've got some doors starting to appear and I'm tentatively walking through some of them. This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it to EVERYONE. Not just folks who think they are creative. I mean that - EVERYONE.
When my husband and I were dating more than 11 years ago, he didn't know he was creative at all. I have worked him over the years just gently encouraging him. And now he is an artist! He is really exploring it (drawing a LOT on his iPad). I love his artwork! And this book helped me encourage him over the years despite the fact that I hadn't read very far into it.
He is actually the one who bought this for ME probably 12 years ago!! He was the one with the vision. He is so supportive.
