Good w/ minor setbacks

Great grill. I've used it many of times now and I'm so happy with it. I've cooked almost everything on it. The grill requires hardwood charcoal instead of briquettes which isn't such a big deal although I think briquettes give you a more intense grill taste. There are three reasons why I didn't give it a five star rating. First: The grill is really hard to clean. I've wastesd so much money on grill scrubbers and spray and nothing seems to work on this grill. Second: Because this grill doesn't come with a lid food takes a little longer to cook than on other grills. Three: This lotus grilled is design to be used indoors. The built in fan is supposed to make this grill "virtually" smokeless however, there is too much smoke for this grill to be an indoor grill. I do however use it indoor but only if it's in a WELL ventilated area. Even with all the setbacks I still love this grill and the convinence it provides.

We use this in our condo lanai as it is ole less IF you use the hardwood charcoal and gel lighter fluid that goes with it . Unfortunately they are both expensive and I could only find them by ordering on Amazon. Our neighbors used traditional barbecue coals and did not have as good results. We also found it fun to pack up in our car and bring for a bratwurst barbecue on the beach. The 13 " size fits about four hamburgers and nothing else. With the special coal and lighter fluid it only takes about four minutes to heat up. We still had to scrub the grill. The easy to clean in the dishwasher claim really didn't happen for us.

Novel idea but way overpriced...

On the plus side, it is compact, starts quickly, burns hot enough. On the minus side, the gel fuel is hard to find, hardwood charcoal does not really leave a chargrilled flavor(too hot?), and clean up is harder than advertised. I did try solid starter and half a square seems to work well. Although I soak the grill portion to clean it, the center circle stays encrusted and smokes a little. The stainless bowl has become discolored, even with soaking and fine abrasive cleaning, but it is a grill. I see this as an improvement over a plain portable charcoal grill, but it is certainly not worth the money.

Bought this grill last year for use on our boat. I expected to use it enough to justify the cost but we hardly used anything to cook with as the grill worked so well. I have already bought a new supply of charcoal and lighting gel to last us through the season and am looking forward to many many grilled meals on the boat. Cooking is virtually smokeless, grill heats up quickly and food ends up cooked perfectly. Who could ask for anything more. So glad I found this. yes it's pricey but looks like prices have gone down from last year and even considering what I paid I think it is worth every penny

design flaw

AVOID IT!!! there is no such thing as warranty. this unit has a huge design flaw, inner charcoal holder rusts away and renders unit completely useless (less than 8 months, used only 3 times). Manufacturer will not respond.

Great design for outdoor use

Very neat design for outdoor use, easy to use, and easy to clean. Great for picnics and small gatherings. I also bought the special lighter gel and charcoal on Amazon and it only takes 5 min to start the grill. It doesn't generate much smoke, and gives you medium heat to cook. The grill top is made of stainless steel. The hardwood charcoal does not generate much ashes and is super easy to clean.

Great for quick grilling at home, seems unreliable for other uses

PROS: Incredibly portable, easy to clean (when there isn't a flare up), and fast. Wonderful for quick grilled foods when I don't want to fire up the big grill.
CONS: No lid and unpredictable (in regards to actually working and flare ups). This makes me wary of taking it camping or relying on it for food when I'm not at the house (where I have backup cooking options). The charcoal canister is not meant to last forever and needs to be replaced, which is difficult in the U.S., as I have only found replacements on the European manufacturer's site.

I purchased the Blazing Red regular sized model for $130 from Amazon. I also purchased the Lotus Grill brand fuel gel, and I use mesquite hardwood charcoal that I break into smaller pieces to fit into the charcoal canister.

Out of the box - The product arrived in nice shape. I was surprised by how light in weight the grill is. The manual is inside the top of the carrying case (I didn't notice it until I was putting the grill in the case after 2 uses), but there is a video on YouTube that does a good job of showing how to use the grill.

First use - As promised the grill was ready to use in 5-7 minutes. There was a small bit of smoke at first and a brief chemical/plasticky smell. We grilled two 12 oz ribeye steaks and two batches of full-length asparagus, and it was a tight fit. I was pleased with how the grill functioned in cooking these; unfortunately I cannot remember how high I had the fan going to get these cooked. The cooking isn't *completely* even, so I moved the food a bit more than I would on a typical charcoal grill. The grill really needs some sort of lid, but a sheet of foil works. The red outside portion of the bowl stayed room temperature. The charcoals stayed hot for about an hour total, maybe a bit longer. I tried to cook pineapple slices and yam slices on the grill for dessert after we finished dinner, and that was not successful. Clean up was easy.

Second use - The grill lit up fine and was ready to use quickly. This time there was no smoke or chemical smell. I was cooking 12 skin-on chicken thighs in two batches. The manufacturer asserts that flare-ups won't happen even with fatty food; however, that is not true. I had the fan on high, and the fat from the chicken skin caused a huge flare-up, blackening the chicken (turned out to be yummy!) and the inside of the grill bowl. After intense scrubbing and two cleans, the blackening has not gone away. The exterior of the grill bowl was hot to the touch. The heat lasted only long enough to cook the two batches of chicken. I probably wasted the coals having the fan on high. Once again I used foil as a lid.

Third use - The fan didn't start. I put in new batteries, and still no fan. The fan is essential for the grill to work. My boyfriend gave the bottom of the grill a smack, and the fan started. I'm extremely disappointed in the grill's apparent unreliabilty and cheapness. We were able to cook 4 large hamburgers on the grill, and the coals were hot for awhile after this. I used foil as a lid this time as well.
