Editorial Reviews
Review
* "In her middle-grade debut, Chokshi spins a fantastical narrative that seamlessly intertwines Hindu cosmology and folklore, feminism, and witty dialogue for an uproarious novel for young readers. Chokshi comes into her own in this novel, reminding readers of the power of language and of stories."―Kirkus (starred review)
PRAISE FOR ARU SHAH AND THE END OF TIME
"Readers will be delighted by this adventurous dive into Hindu mythology and the chance to cheer along a heroic young protagonist. Chokshi makes it easy to connect with Aru by showing her learn from her mistakes (with the help of a sarcastic sorcerer pigeon). This series starter also doesn't skimp on important lessons about friendship, family, and love."―Booklist
PRAISE FOR ARU SHAH AND THE END OF TIME
* "This series kick-off . . . also the first book from the Rick Riordan Presents imprint, expertly channels the humor and action that have made Riordan's own work so successful. Aru commands the spotlight . . . and Chokshi weaves an engrossing adventure that will leave readers anticipating the next installment."―Publishers Weekly (starred review)
PRAISE FOR ARU SHAH AND THE END OF TIME
*"Using Hindu mythology as the foundation, Chokshi has created an exciting adventure around a coming-of-age tale. Just as "Percy Jackson" led tweens to a deeper exploration and appreciation of classic Greek mythology, Chokshi's tale will likely inspire a similar demand for traditional Indian mythology. An enthralling start to a series that Riordan fans and anyone in the mood for a high-octane adventure will love."―School Library Journal (starred review) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Aru Shah is the first story I have read by Ms. Chokshi, and I'm impressed. Ms. Chokshi is a flowery writer. And I don’t mean that in the way that she writes nonsense, but that her prose is like a garden of flowers — beautiful, delicate, fierce, colorful and wonderful to all the senses. She blends modernity and mythology so effortlessly I would sometimes forget that we do not live in Aru’s world.
Speaking of Aru, the main protagonist of this little adventure, she is amazing. Aru reminded me of me, a young girl with a wild imagination and no real friends to share it with. Unlike me, Aru had spark and strength to go do what is right even when it is wrong, but most importantly she would stand up for herself with no fear (even though there is much to fear).
Aru’s character grows throughout the novel is something I wish upon everyone that age, finding their inner strength to acknowledge your fault/weaknesses and use them to your advantage to save the world from ending. Even though she is only 12 years old, Aru is a character that any person of any age can appreciate, love and see themselves in.
Aru’s world is filled with interesting and fleshed out characters who will win your heart. Like Boo, Mini, the palace, and Chitrigupta (just to name a few). Each one of the characters felt independent with their own little quirks. You’ll cheer for them and wish to protect them. Yes, even the palace.
This story is about adventure, friendship, family, sisterhood, trying not to die, but most importantly it is about self-acceptance.
I look forward to Aru’s next adventure in Aru Shah and the Song of Death. WHICH BY THE WAY!!! There is a boy on the cover!!! *eyebrow wiggles*

He did not like the main character very much. She was a bit on the annoying side with constantly lying and just her personality in general. That did not keep him from liking the story as a whole, though.
About half of the kids in his class did not realize that she was in America until someone pointed it out. They thought the story took place in India. I guess the book does not clarify that enough for nine year old's to realize that the girl's family is from India but they are living in America. Just a side note for those of you that are buying it for a school reading.
I am definitely going to read the rest of the books in the series!
She is almost a pathological liar at the beginning of the book. She has good reasons for it, which a lot of kids her age can probably relate to. I never lied on that scale, but I can really sympathize with her. She has an almost resentful relationship with her mother, who is always away on business trips and always forgetting things that are important to Aru. Aru also has a difficult time connecting with the kids in her school--the lies are her shield from what she thinks is inevitable mockery. Ultimately, Aru really wants to fit in, but because she doesn't think she will she choose to lie about why she doesn't fit in.
This leads to her making a very poor choice and awakening a demon who is bent on destroying the world. She's thrown on a quest (While in her Spiderman pjs) to save the world and her only help is another girl her age, Mini, who is afraid that everything is going to kill her in some way and a talking pigeon.
Its a fun story and pulls in the colorful world of Indian mythology really well. I also REALLY loved having girl characters driving the narrative.
I will be looking forward to checking out the next book.

What I liked?
💖Indian mythology! For someone who loves it, this book is so fun & for someone who doesn't know anything about it, you are in for a treat.
💖 Amazing main characters
-> Aru is confident when needs to be but also has her self doubts. I love how the protagonist lies a lot just because she wants to be popular. I loved how she thinks. Some of the questions she asked in the book are thoughts I'd too.
-> Mini is such an adorable cutie pie and the bond between Aru and her is just beautiful. She is part-Indian & part-Filipino and I love how she is so smart and talks about medical things.
-> Boo our grumpy, brilliant and lovely sidekick(don't tell him I said so)
💖 How can I say no to an adventure where I get to meet characters I've heard so much about.
💖weird but cute chapter titles
💖I don't have to worry about pronouncing the names wrongly because I know them all my life
I loved this book but I'd have loved it more had I read this one when I was a pre-teen myself. I'm happy that such a book is written and people can relate to the characters. And remember this is a children's book where the Hindu Gods & Goddesses are portrayed as cool & fun. So try to read this as a story and not as a depiction of a religion.
There are certain things which annoyed me a bit but I'm not gonna take them into consideration and recommend this book.

The unique element in this book, however, is how seamlessly it incorporated Hindu mythology into the narrative. As a practising Hindu, who grew up with these stories and view some of the characters as divine entities, I never felt a dissonance between my beliefs and how they were portrayed in this book. I thought that Roshani did a fantastic job of adapting them into a modern narrative while still preserving their essence and doing justice to the source material. She used her imagination to superb effect in reimagining scenes, places and characters from the Mahabharata. She also described some core beliefs of Hinduism such as karma and rebirth in a simple way that is accessible to children. It was the perfect mix of fun, adventure and learnings with amazing characters and a well-paced plot. I honestly cannot wait for the other books in the series to come out and wrap me up in their magic!

Highly recommended.
The covers are super gorgeous.
The paper quality is amazing.
Received a day before the delivery date. Best book to read after Percy Jackson or Harry Potter.
The story was soooooo amazing that I can't stop saying wow in my head. Soooooo cool. Highly recommended. Even if I read it 100 times, it will still be better the 101 time. Go for it!

I LOVED THIS!
This book was everything I wanted! It has vibes from Sailor Moon, which I've always been obsessed with.
It was the middle grade I needed. It made me laugh a lot with all those pop culture references. Roshani Chokshi has a beautiful writing style, she's excellent at describing places, she makes you dream about India.
I loved the characters as well, Boo was such a fun pigeon and Mini was hilarious, Aru has become a knew fav, she's strong and ironic.
Hindu mythology is so interesting!
I CAN'T WAIT for the sequel! I want to read it now!
