Review

PRAISE FOR ARU SHAH AND THE END OF TIME

* "In her middle-grade debut, Chokshi spins a fantastical narrative that seamlessly intertwines Hindu cosmology and folklore, feminism, and witty dialogue for an uproarious novel for young readers. Chokshi comes into her own in this novel, reminding readers of the power of language and of stories."―
Kirkus (starred review)

PRAISE FOR ARU SHAH AND THE END OF TIME

"Readers will be delighted by this adventurous dive into Hindu mythology and the chance to cheer along a heroic young protagonist. Chokshi makes it easy to connect with Aru by showing her learn from her mistakes (with the help of a sarcastic sorcerer pigeon). This series starter also doesn't skimp on important lessons about friendship, family, and love."―

PRAISE FOR ARU SHAH AND THE END OF TIME

* "This series kick-off . . . also the first book from the Rick Riordan Presents imprint, expertly channels the humor and action that have made Riordan's own work so successful. Aru commands the spotlight . . . and Chokshi weaves an engrossing adventure that will leave readers anticipating the next installment."―
Publishers Weekly (starred review)

PRAISE FOR ARU SHAH AND THE END OF TIME

*"Using Hindu mythology as the foundation, Chokshi has created an exciting adventure around a coming-of-age tale. Just as "Percy Jackson" led tweens to a deeper exploration and appreciation of classic Greek mythology, Chokshi's tale will likely inspire a similar demand for traditional Indian mythology. An enthralling start to a series that Riordan fans and anyone in the mood for a high-octane adventure will love."―School Library Journal (starred review) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From School Library Journal

Gr 3–6—Seventh grader Aru should never have lit the ancient lamp. When she put the lighter to the wick, the world froze and she released the awful Sleeper. Aru is suddenly launched into the world of the gods and surrounded by mythical characters come to life. Aru discovers she is a Pandava, born with the soul of one of the five brothers featured in the Mahabharata. She also has a soul sister, Mini, to assist her in this quest—highly unusual for a Pandava. Aru and Mini must enter the Kingdom of Death to find out the secret that will destroy the Sleeper. Rick Riordan writes the introduction to this book that has a similar tone and pacing to his popular "Percy Jackson" series, but Chokshi brings her own sensibility and style. Using Hindu mythology as the foundation, Chokshi has created an exciting adventure around a coming-of-age tale. A glossary provides readers with a basic introduction to the various traditional stories that Chokshi drew from. Just as "Percy Jackson" led tweens to a deeper exploration and appreciation of classic Greek mythology, Chokshi's tale will likely inspire a similar demand for traditional Indian mythology. VERDICT An enthralling start to a series that Riordan fans and anyone in the mood for a high-octane adventure will love.—Clare A. Dombrowski, Amesbury Public Library, MA --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars An unforgettable adventure for every age
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on October 4, 2018
“Aru Shah and the End of Time” is one of the first novels published by Rick Riordan’s new imprint Rick Riordan Presents. Following the same style of Mr. Riordan’s Percy Jackson novels, Aru Shah is about a young girl who finds out she is the reincarnation of one of the Pandava brothers after a series of unfortunate events (she tried to impress some popular kids and then well…the end of time began). Roshani Chokshi introduces the reader a rich world of Indian mythology, which turns out is much more wild and colorful than Greek/Roman mythology. In this middle-grade novel, Ms. Chokshi takes us in an unforgettable adventure that will make you wish you had your own glowing ball of crazy magic.

Aru Shah is the first story I have read by Ms. Chokshi, and I'm impressed. Ms. Chokshi is a flowery writer. And I don’t mean that in the way that she writes nonsense, but that her prose is like a garden of flowers — beautiful, delicate, fierce, colorful and wonderful to all the senses. She blends modernity and mythology so effortlessly I would sometimes forget that we do not live in Aru’s world.

Speaking of Aru, the main protagonist of this little adventure, she is amazing. Aru reminded me of me, a young girl with a wild imagination and no real friends to share it with. Unlike me, Aru had spark and strength to go do what is right even when it is wrong, but most importantly she would stand up for herself with no fear (even though there is much to fear).

Aru’s character grows throughout the novel is something I wish upon everyone that age, finding their inner strength to acknowledge your fault/weaknesses and use them to your advantage to save the world from ending. Even though she is only 12 years old, Aru is a character that any person of any age can appreciate, love and see themselves in.

Aru’s world is filled with interesting and fleshed out characters who will win your heart. Like Boo, Mini, the palace, and Chitrigupta (just to name a few). Each one of the characters felt independent with their own little quirks. You’ll cheer for them and wish to protect them. Yes, even the palace.

This story is about adventure, friendship, family, sisterhood, trying not to die, but most importantly it is about self-acceptance.

I look forward to Aru’s next adventure in Aru Shah and the Song of Death. WHICH BY THE WAY!!! There is a boy on the cover!!! *eyebrow wiggles*

I was blown away by how well this book was crafted. Starting from the characters, I think Aru was a breath of fresh air because mostly in MG books the protagonists are the goody two-shoes kind, especially girls. I liked how Aru’s habit of lying was used throughout the story and how she realised how to use her quick wit and imagination as a weapon. I also adored Aru’s companion and sister-in-arms, Mini, and wish I had a little sister just like her! She was also biracial, which came up during the story and was not just a token representation, which was another aspect I loved. I enjoyed the side characters as well, especially that of the bird, who added much needed comic relief as well as intrigue. The plot followed a formula similar to Rick’s books and as a huge fan of that, I was sucked in from the beginning.
The unique element in this book, however, is how seamlessly it incorporated Hindu mythology into the narrative. As a practising Hindu, who grew up with these stories and view some of the characters as divine entities, I never felt a dissonance between my beliefs and how they were portrayed in this book. I thought that Roshani did a fantastic job of adapting them into a modern narrative while still preserving their essence and doing justice to the source material. She used her imagination to superb effect in reimagining scenes, places and characters from the Mahabharata. She also described some core beliefs of Hinduism such as karma and rebirth in a simple way that is accessible to children. It was the perfect mix of fun, adventure and learnings with amazing characters and a well-paced plot. I honestly cannot wait for the other books in the series to come out and wrap me up in their magic!
