Though these pieces are typical of Pärt's style, they seem less bleak than those on previous discs. The Te Deum, while often in a minor tonality and sometimes imposing, has a suitable extroverted quality; the Magnificat, with its hushed intensity, does seem solemn, but its cadences are striking, typically resolving from a tonal chord to a shimmering major-second dissonance. The Berliner Messe includes not only the Mass ordinary, but also three propers for Pentecost, and displays a range of moods from nervous penitence in the Kyrie to lively good cheer in the Credo to serenity in the Agnus Dei. Best is the sequence "Veni sancte spiritus," sung largely in unison to a haunting 6/8 melody. Tiny Estonia, Pärt's homeland, has provided him with some impressive interpreters. --Matthew Westphal

This music and performance is absolutely brilliant. My only quibble is the sounds engineering is a little low level of recording. Recorded almost 30 years ago though. Have to turn up my stereo quite a bit to get a full sound and hear the quieter parts. Three of my 6 speakers are Klipsch RP series and working on slowly replacing the other 3 with Klipsch RP. Streaming from ripped MP3 through a DAC Bluetooth to amped receiver. This music is timeless and good on whatever you listen to it on. However, if able find a good sound system, turn it up, sit back, close your eyes and be swept away!

I bought this one to give as a gift. Part's work creates a bridge between Gregorian chant in a monastery and Prokofiev. As clear and piercing as a clear star filled winter night.

John Tavener's music was the reason why I'm fascinated with minimal choral music; it all started with his Lamentations for Jerusalem. So now I'm still exploring in this particular genre, and suddenly I discover an Estonian composer named Arvo Part. He has quickly become one of my favorite 20th-century choral composers alongside Tavener & Morten Lauridsen, and it's all because of this one CD. This CD is part of an ECM series that provides plenty of Part's choral music. Here, we have four compositions: Te Deum, Magnificat, Silouans Song, and Berliner Messe. While Magnificat and Silouans Song are both short works that are about five minutes, Te Deum and Berliner Messe last about twenty-five minutes. All four pieces are equally brilliant, and are equally lyrical. It's a mervelous CD overall, but I don't think I'll stop here. This is just one of the CD's from ECM's Arvo Part series, and it's only the beginning. Next comes "Litany."

The music was as moving as you expect a work by Part to be. However, anything but the best of a reproduction suite is insufficient to bring out the melodic surprises which are hidden in his compositions. Having been introduced to Part on a very good system, I found that my own was not satisfying enough. It may be that the quality of the recording was insufficient, but I have small doubt that my disappointment with my purchase stems from the inadequate quality of my own kit. Amazon's part in the transaction was swift and accurate, but be prepared to meet a need on your part in managing to get the full measure of what you have paid for.
