The Lamp that Integrates the Practices is a systematic and comprehensive exposition of the most advanced yogas of the Esoteric Community (Guhyasamaja) Tantra as espoused by the Noble Tradition, an influential school of interpretation within the Mahayoga traditions of Indian Buddhist esoterism. Equal in authority to Nagarjuna's famous Five Stages (Pañcakrama), Aryadeva's work is perhaps the earliest prose example of the "stages of the mantra path" genre in Sanskrit. Its studied gradualism exerted immense influence on later Indian and Tibetan tradition, and it is widely cited by masters from all four major lineages of Tibetan Buddhism.

This volume presents the Lamp in a tri-lingual format: its Sanskrit original critically-edited from recently-identified manuscripts, a critical edition of the eleventh-century Tibetan translation by Rin-chen Bzang-po (including notes on readings found in "lost," alternative translations), and a thoroughly-annotated English translation.

Includes an introductory study discussing the history of the Guhyasamaja and its exegetical traditions, surveying the scriptural and commentarial sources of the Noble Tradition, and analyzing in detail the contents of the Lamp. Features a detailed, tri-lingual glossary.

At long last! Finally someone has gotten around to translating & publishing these fantastic works,so long inaccessible to the public. If you want to read a fascinating addition to whatever tantras you may or may not have read, this is one of the best...but not for the beginner. Buy and dig in!

Dr. Wedemeyer is correct that this is a necessary purchase, well worth the money, none of which will go to him anyway. Be sure to get his next book, Making Sense of Tantric Buddhism, as well. In any case, this is a wonderful introduction to the Unexcelled Yoga Tantras, and it is far more than an introduction. Dr. Wedemeyer guides the reader through the material as the master that he is, and the text itself is among the most important treatises in the Indo-Tibetan tradition of Vajrayana. It is a critical volume for practitioners of the Unexcelled Yoga Tantras in particular, but serves well as an authoritative guide to the traditions apologetic strategies as well, for those who would like that instead. Overall, it is crucial for the academic and the practitioner both. And when you are finished with this, get some Tibetan stone cheese: Brilliant Illumination of the Lamp of the Five Stages, translated by Robert A.F. Thurman, also in the AIBS series. You may want to buy a second copy, since you will surely want to give one to a friend.
