I didn't need the details, for example, about the girl who found Bella by the side of the road and named her, because I knew they were fictional. I assume we don't really know that Bella was stolen from a family with two little girls, where she was never let inside the house. These chapters were well-written, and I enjoyed similar stories as told in the fictional "A Dog's Purpose" and "A Dog's Journey," but somehow this creative non-fiction lessened the impact of the overall story when I knew a real dog was involved.
The brutality toward animals is difficult to read, as it's meant to be. I don't mean to diminish Bella's story at all, and I admire Schlichting both for rescuing her dogs and writing their story.
I recommend "As Bright As the Sun" to anyone who wants to know more about dogs involved in dog fighting operations.
But the most important statement to be made here is that Bella's story is not the typical "dog-fighting" tale. Cynthia Schlichting chronicles Bella's Journey home to her, Brian, Foster and Jane in a warm inviting way. I was made to feel a part of this wonderful family, invited in as I read the words. Bella's short time with me changed me in so many ways for the better. Reading the heartfelt words that Cynthia has shared here has strengthened my resolve and made the bruises that come with rescue easier to bear.
Cynthia's story shares a message that must be told. And when it is told and engraved on your heart, there is no going back. You KNOW there is a way to stop these atrocities and we, as a caring people, can find that way. Her unassuming, easy conversation with the reader makes you feel right at home and will change your heart forever. You will laugh, smile, cry and KNOW that Bella has found her way home.
Cynthia makes us better people with her book because she makes us want to do it again... and again... and again. And she shares the message that EVERYONE CAN DO SOMETHING. This is the best book I have read in a very long time. I am indeed blessed.
Cynthia writes with her heart and her soul. She's funny, self deprecating, and loves her fur babies and life. She's 'the Heart'. Brian, her husband is 'the Brains'. We meet them, and their growing brood of 4 footed rescues as they come into their lives one at a time. Such great descriptions that all pet loving households can relate to. I found myself laughing, nodding my head in agreement, and crying at times.
I picked this up tonight intending to read a few chapters. Instead, I finished it. I wanted to savor the story, but I needed to find out how Foster, Jane, and Bella did.
Loved this book!
