Editorial Reviews

Born to teenaged parents in a small town, sixteen-year-old Lucy Diamond (Sarah Bolger, Once Upon a Time) longs for a traditional family, but with an immature working mother (Claire Danes, My So-Called Life, Homeland) and a strict, frequently absent father (James Marsden, X-Men, Enchanted) she is mostly on her own.  As she senses her parents' emotional distance, Lucy grows close to her childhood best friend, Kevin (Thomas Mann, Beautiful Creatures), who soon becomes her first sexual partner.  After he abruptly moves away, Lucy struggles to make sense of her fledgling sex life, plan for her future, and help her mother start over again.  Featuring an all-star cast that includes Jeremy Sisto (Waitress), Jon Tenney (The Closer), Anika Noni Rose (Dreamgirls) and Peter Fonda, AS COOL AS I AM is an insightful coming-of-age story that captures the real drama and bittersweet moments of adolescence.

"If memory is malleable then the future is too." Lucy is a sixteen year old girl who is too smart for her own good. She spends her free time learning how to cook and hanging out with her friend Kenny. Her mother (Danes) and father (Marsden) had her when they were young and not ready for that responsibility. Now with her dad gone all but 4 times a year and her mom acting like a kid herself Lucy is left to discover life for herself. This is a movie that again proves my point that a movie can be entertaining and worth watching involving great acting rather then special effects. This is a movie along the line of What Maisie Knew only involving an older child rather then a 6 year old. Parents that should not have been allowed to have children and a child who is more mature then the parents. You really root for Lucy the entire time and by the time the end come you feel extremely sorry for her as well as relief. That is a hard combination to achieve but that's what great writing and acting does. Overall, a great movie that is pretty depressing but I recommend this. I give it a B+.

I'm a big Claire Danes fan and a s always she did a wonderful job in this move. I was very impressed with Sarah Bolger. This is the first film I've seen her in and I think she is a very talented young actress with a great future in film.

This movie would be an excellent resource for beginning a discussion of "coming of age" topics between adults and teens. The actors deliver authentic portrayals in situations which ignited a lot of symbolic resonance for me. In several places I choose to stop watching (thanks to DVD and streaming) because the emotions that came up were quite intense. On whole it was a very worthwhile way to spend a few hours. I'm sure I will watch it again sometime.

Not the absolute best movie ever, but definitely a good flick—way better than I had expected. mostly due to the two teenagers—they were very likable, and I'm a sucker for kids that have a very screwed up family life, and are still able to rise above and function with grace and maturity.

This is good! I had no expectations, but love Claire Danes. She doesnt disappoint - the characters are rich and abundant, if extremely flawed, - and acted well.... ahh the movies. Makes you feel good about life essentially - in an unexpected way.

=== WARNING: THERE BE SOME SPOILERS HERE ===

Claire Danes must have been worried about the fees for keeping up her condo (since sold) when she signed up for this lifeless dog, shortly before Homeland became a breakout hit. Either that or the project looked better on paper than it does on celluloid. (She's reported to be quite upset by how it turned out.) As Cool As I Am is a great idea--it's based on a Y/A book I haven't read, but it reminded me a little--at least the set-up did--of a wonderful short story by Mary Robison called "An Amateur's Guide to the Night"---but the execution is flaccid and second-hand. There's little structure, the only "energy" comes from ridiculously-fast cutting (many scenes last only a minute) the second act is poorly delineated, the characters double back on themselves with their actions and plot lines appear when convenient like a cinematic deus ex machina. ("Hello, ex-boyfriend. I haven't heard from you since high school! And I'm sure glad you called now that nothing's going on in this movie!")

It's a pity too, because in addition to Claire Danes, one of my favorite actresses, it features a fine performance by a relative newcomer, Sarah Bolger. The two of them are the most compelling reason to watch. The men in the movie are 1) uniformly unmemorable, and 2) somewhat similar-looking, so that when the deus ex machina deus ex-boyfriend comes in at the end he looks eerily like the guy Claire's just had a sort-of affair with. And if you shaved the goatee off the corporate coach at the beginning, he'd look similar as well. And none of them has anything resembling a personality. In fact, the guy at the end barely gets any screen time or lines, yet he's implied as the answer to Claire's prayers.

This was a very unexpected good surprise. This movie is so good and cute! It's touching and I highly recommend. Just kinda a good, old fashion type movie that they don't make many of anymore!

I almost gave this a four-star rating, but by the end, I had to shake my head and admit that it was all over the place. I understand the points made, but it was disjointed in delivery. Not a Danes fan, but the overall acting by cast was decent.
