About the Author
When she's not creating stories of her own or consuming the stories of others (in all forms) she dabbles in photography, plays MMORPGs with her husband (ranged DPS, sometimes heals) and, despite a tendency toward tech-geekery, collects fountain pen inks and fountain pens in which to use them.

About the author

Darcy's first career was spent turning some of Australia's best loved novels and non-fiction into audio books. Now she is enjoying a second career writing her own stories about curious, compassionate women who get themselves into trouble and find their own way out.
Born in Philadelphia, USA, and raised in Melbourne, Australia, Darcy has been travelling since she was 10 months old. She has lived in various cities in the USA, Australia, South Africa, Japan, Thailand, and New Zealand. In 2016, she and her husband, Michael, made a move of a different kind, from the inner city of Melbourne to a goldrush town in the Central Victorian Highlands, where they enjoy a slower pace of life and the company of a white and ginger cat they have named Oggie (after Oghma, the Celtic god of writing.)

I read an ARC of this book.
This is deemed a romantic suspense and there is a lot to figure out in this book. On the surface the story is about a woman going to teach in Africa and coming home to Australia abruptly. The family is excited she's back but doesn't know the whole story. Cait/Kitty is hiding the real reason and her hero/love interest Riley is going to find out all the secrets. As a detective it is his intuition that something is off and he won't stop until he helps her solve this mystery. But the story is much deeper and reveals some of the culture and fears that many have about humanitarian workers in foreign unsettled countries and all the politics surrounding these governments and how they play with other countries. In some parts I felt the story went too political and away from the story in effort to explain the whys. If it were a movie the audience would groan at too much talking and not enough action. The build up of the romance took forever and although it fit into place still felt too convenient. I think it would have been stronger story if they focused more of the solving the problem and then what we all knew was inevitable happens. The end comes to a very sharp conclusion after all the detail we're left with what happened and what happens next? Over all a good story a bit over detailed in parts but a good strong female lead.

I wasn't quite ready for the ending.. not that there was anything wrong with it.. just wasn't ready for the pleasure of reading this book to end..
The story line had complexity without being difficult to follow. Good development of characters and interactions.
I thought the portrayal of the protagonists PTSD well done making her a very believable but fallible character.
All in all a very good mix of suspense, reality in regards to the violence being perpetrated in some areas of the world and tempered with love & romance to retain our connection to the world we live in.
