For a 44-page book written in the early 1900s, I expected me to be able to blow through it in 10 minutes. Suffice to say, I now recognise my own arrogance.
There’s a reason why some of the greatest thinkers and successful people today laud this book and recommend it freely. Every other sentence is a food for thought.
They are simple concepts although, borrowing from the language of the time, a little bit hard to understand sometimes. Not as bad as Shakespearean English but sometimes I feel it’s halfway there 🙈
They are also not new concepts but perhaps sometimes we just need a reminder of things we should already know. I won’t call them common sense because honestly, I don’t believe there’s such a thing as common sense. What’s common to one may not be common to others. Especially coming from different backgrounds and cultures. But I digress...
This book, for me, was a reminder. A reminder of basic human behaviour and conduct and thoughts. It reminds us that wholesomeness does not equal wealth. So often we get upset and rant about “I’m a good person, why am I not successful or rich or famous or...”.
For some reason we equate being nice/kind/loving/religious/pious/filial with deserving of success or riches or fame. News flash, they’re completely different things!
Anyways, short read, but expect to spend more than you would estimate on reading and understanding and internalising the words. I know I did 😁

About the Author
James Allen (1864-1912) was born into a working-class British family. At age fifteen, his father was tragically killed, and James dropped out of school to work and support his family. Reading voraciously and developing his writing skills during his few spare hours, he worked his way up to the level of executive secretary. Through it all, James focused his thoughts on truth, beauty, virtue, and success, and these qualities came to define his life. At age 38, James retired from business to become a full-time writer and contemplative philosopher, pouring out his thoughts in a steady stream of books, the most renowned being As a Man Thinketh.

Not the full original version as stated in title. I had the original version awhile ago, and gave it to a friend as I had read it many times. Figured I’d get another copy to have handy to give out again if I need it. Won’t bother to term for as cheap as it was. Amazon is good on most things, but for some reason, books are a problem like this, as I had this happen with another book before and the reviews were positive (which means a lot of ppl never read the original and are getting duped)

This little classic gem “As A Man Thinketh” by James Allen is one of my all time favorite personal development books and literally a blueprint on living. It serves as a course of action for approaching life in a meaningful manner while capturing the pure essence of the human mind and unlimited potential each of us has if we simply will change the way we think.
Everyone should read this wonderful philosophy book many times throughout their life because it takes more than one reading to fully understand the powerful insights given in taking responsibility for your thoughts, actions and circumstance. I first read this book when I was 16 years old for personal growth and it quickly became my guide for shaping my thought processes and creating self awareness throughout my entire life. I have given it as a gift to many clients and friends and continue to use all of the principles in my coaching practice for well over 30 years. There is so much life-improving wisdom, advice, and guidance packed inside this motivational book that you will still learn something new every time you read it.
They say what's old becomes new again. Many people consider James Allen as the founder of the personal development industry and current motivational speakers, success coaches and authors credit this book for providing the foundation to their teachings. Allen understood over a century ago what everyone is now calling "The Law of Attraction” and set the stage for the book, “The Secret” to be written. We are what we think...and you always have the choice to determine what that is!

This book really doesn't say anything new. All of the "gurus" of personal development have "taught" these principles in full or in part.
What makes this book so great in my opinion is it unpacks what the current talking heads put in books three times it's size, 8 hour seminars, and ongoing "coaching" in 30 minutes and a little over 100 pages.
The $1.04 I spent on this eclipses the thousands I've spent on personal development over the years. I don't have to spend another dime on personal development. Wish I'd have read this sooner. If you're a young person, read this book now.

This book is definitely something I was looking for. I've had some problems in life, for all my life. Reading the book, I've realized what was in common of all my problems: wrong thoughts. I would never think to myself, that situation is much simpler as I thought at first: what you think and firmly believe in your mind, that you become. I was not a believer, I was never really trying to change my thoughts to something more positive or to something that I want to become. My thoughts were often completely uncontrolled, completely wild. I was living in the past, relieving some painful moments from my past over and over. Consequenlty, my every day reality was completely aligned with my thoughts and I was not as successfull as I could be. Sometimes those thougths become so strong, that I wasn't able to work and live normally. The book gave me most needed medicine: the Truth about the things. There was something that I've never tried: stirred effort to better thoughts, to thoughts of my own deepest desires, without fears and doubts which were constantly in my mind and preventing me from achieving success. I am still on my way, it' going to be a long way, till the end of my life. But thanks to this man - James Allen - who so brilliantly and shortly wrote the Truth I now know the path.

I respect and believe the things that the author teaches. It is truth and right and can be applied in every facet of our lives that give us strength in experience, and success in the goals and ambitions we place our focus. It is in the power of our thought that we can become who we want, and are meant to be.

Basic ideas of the laws of attraction - however the style is dated so has become a heavy read more modern writers have developed the ideas and made them more accessible to modern audiences. Having said that I liked the poetry so 3 stars instead of 2!

I had to give this book a 5* rating. It is truth, pure and simple.
I've heard many motivational speakers quote Allen, and I have been meaning to read this book for many years...wish I'd read it sooner.
It's such a quick read that I got through it in less than two hours. What I learnt however, will stay with me for a lifetime. Read this book and apply the principles. So many successful people talk about similar ways of thinking to those described in this book that I think most of them have probably read it or been influenced by someone else who has. My new favourite motivational/ LOA/ spiritual book.

Don't buy the kindle version of this book. Much of the text has no spaces between words with words often overlapping. Virtually impossible to read.
