Derek Taylor (7 May 1932 – 8 September 1997) was an English journalist, writer, publicist and record producer. He is best known for his role as press officer to the Beatles, for whom he became one of several associates to earn the moniker "the Fifth Beatle".

One of the best Beatles era books ever. No Fab Four collection should be without Derek Taylor's droll, witty observations. He was part of that inner circle surrounding the greatest group ever and though he was in and out of favor with Brian, who saked hin, the Beatles themselves loved and respected him.

… but the bottom line is that there is quite a lot in this book to interest a music lover, and that definitely includes the parts about A&M, WEA U.K., managing his department at Apple, and the other artists with whom Derek Taylor worked. (Yes, the Beatles-related stuff, also, is very interesting) "As Time Goes By" is well worth reading.

Despite the hype put there by the publishers, I don't think it's right to consider this a "Beatles" book per say. It's not even a book about the life of the author. What Taylor has put together (as he says, largely against his own will and better judgement) is a mildly disjointed memoir of his experiences in the 60's. Some of those experiences have to do with the Beatles. Some have to do with other big names of the 60's, such as the Beach Boys. Some have to do with kind of random folks (like the Indian man who wanted Apple to sponsor a poetry magazine.) The one thing ALL have in common is that they read through a swirling haze of pot smoke and pills.

That's not to say I didn't finish the book or that it was entirely unenjoyable. Taylor has a unique voice and has led a unique life. One thing I did appreciate is that he doesn't claim to remember, verbatim, every conversation he ever had with the fab four. He paints his memories in broad strokes. While that is slightly infuriating, it is also more honest.

What saves the book, to me, is a kind of self-awareness of what it means to have spent a long time very close to the Beatles' orbit, only to be cast off on the dissolution of the band. What it's like to be part of the trend-making, history writing 60's only to become a part of nostalgia and a living archive in the 70's.

It's not an expensive book, and it is interesting to read, it's just not something I learned a lot of new information from.

This book is not for everyone. If you are an avid Beatles fan it will be up your alley though. I loved the stories and their unique delivery from this Liverpudlian. The book took me on an insiders journey with the Beatles through their start , Apple Corps and all the way past their breakup. A great friend to theBeatles writes kind words honestly.

Except for Chapter 9, this memoir is nowhere near all it's cracked up to be. Taylor endlessly repeats not wanting to write it and not being able to write it. The end product at least DOES live up to his predicted pain: it's pretty darn boring except for a couple chapters. And what I really want to know? How did he and his wife manage to rear 5 children successfully as they were seemingly on hallucinogenic drugs most every day? I would have loved finding the answer to that question!

The author's quirky writing style and equally quirky powers of observation were quite enjoyable and good for a number of laughs. But as a Beatles fan and a fan of that era i did wish he had taken this endeavor more seriously. While I enjoyed his anecdotes, I would love to read a more thoughtful (rather than whimsical), organized and detailed account of the Apple Records days, the West Coast 60s rock scene and the Monterey Pop festival. Still I enjoyed this slice of those things and chalk it up to Derek's writing style and possibly limited ability to recollect given the alcohol & drugs consumed. No doubt what is presented is straight forward, genuine, honest and funny. Overall very much worth the read.

I gave this book 5 stars because it is like the Diary of an unhinged mind in a time of the authors chemically very altered state of mind. At times it is like listening to somebody talk who is very stoned. Derek Taylor was in the inner circle. That is historically proven and very obvious. If you want to compare the Beatles and their inner circle. Read „I me mine“. It very clearly shows why you were one of the Fab Four and why Not.....

The book certainly isn't about Taylor's time with the Beatles but it is about Taylor's time. It's easy to see how he appealed to the group as his command of 60's London cool is vividly but subtly described demonstrated in his ability to avoid or defuse hassles, and ensure that his circle has a good time. I really bought the book as I was intrigued by the comments in the reviews regarding Taylor's style, and indeed it is truly remarkable and enchanting.

It's a strange read. There's not much new here for the dedicated Beatles fan, and it's written in Taylor's very particular style. I found that the style grated quite quickly, coming across as a substance influenced outpouring, if not quite stream of consciousness.
If you are a Beatles die hard it's probably worth a read, if not, I'd probably suggest giving it a miss.
