From the Back Cover

You never know which moment might lead to forever . . .

Asa Cross struggles with being the man everyone wants him to be and the man he knows he really is. A leopard doesn't change its spots, and Asa has always been a predator. He doesn't want to hurt those who love and rely on him, especially one luscious arresting cop who suddenly seems to be interested in him for far more than his penchant for breaking the law. But letting go of old habits is hard, and it's easy to hit bottom when it's the place you know best.

Royal Hastings is quickly learning what the bottom looks like after a tragic situation at work threatens not only her career but also her partner's life. As a woman who has only ever had a few real friends, she's trying to muddle through her confusion and devastation alone. Except she can't stop thinking about the sexy southern bartender she locked up. Crushing on Asa is the last thing she needs, but his allure is too strong to resist. And she knows chasing after a guy who has no respect for the law or himself can only end in heartbreak.

A longtime criminal and a cop just seem so wrong together . . . but for Asa and Royal, being wrong together is the only right choice to make.

3.5 stars
Asa is the sixth book and last book in the Marked Men series. Asa Cross is the brother of Ayden who is married to Jett. He has a criminal past and has been arrested many times. After events in Jett which left Asa almost dying and fighting for his life, he moves to Denver to be closer to his sister and tries to change his life around. He ends up working at The Bar, which Rome owns. Royal was introduced in Nash as the neighbor of the titled character. She is a police officer and is always locking her keys in her car, apartment, squad car, etc. After an incident involving Royal's partner being shot and another officer losing his life, Royal begins to spiral into a dark place, blaming herself. She begins going to the Bar in hopes of getting together with Asa, who turns her down except for one night. Royal and Asa are complete opposites, the trying to be reformed criminal and the cop, but it somehow works for them. They do have issues, mainly Asa thinking he isn't good for Royal and will eventually screw everything up, while Royal just wants to find love and be a good cop. Can these two opposites manage to find their happily ever after?

I liked this book, but didn't love it which is why I'm rating it 3.5 stars. Some parts were a little tedious, mostly when it involved inner monologue, but I can't complain too much about it. I usually have issues when books do not have a lot of details or feelings, but this one does. I also wished that there was maybe more background on Royal and maybe interactions between her, Asa, and Royal's best friend/partner Dominic.

What I did love was seeing the previous Marked Men characters and having a proper send off to them. The epilogue was bittersweet as I will miss this series and characters. I'm looking forward to the new spin-off series called the Saints of Denver, since we have already been introduced to some of these characters in the previous books.

Wow, that gorgeous and fits Asa perfectly! By far the best cover in the series!

The Marked Men series is one of my favorites and ASA provides a nice finale!

I was very excited to read about yummy, bad boy Asa and all his sexy southern charm, but I was a little disappointed in him. I really didn't like the fact that Royal had to do all, ALL the chasing...I mean, how many times was she gonna throw herself at him, be the one to contact him, fight for him? I like my men fighting for their women, not continually pushing them away "for their own good". Asa was just too good, too guilt ridden, too self-deprecating. He has definitely reformed his bad boy ways and sadly that made him kinda boring.
Unfortunately the first 1/4 of the story was a bit lackluster and I just wasn't seeing the spark/chemistry between Asa & Royal.
The conflict between the two seemed kinda ridiculous and contrived. And then having the secret remain between them even though Royal suspects what it is?? That would make anyone crazy!

The epilogue provides a great wrap up to the series, and I'm definitely looking forward to Sayer and Zeb's story in the new spin-off series!

Asa is the last of the Marked Men series. It’s a sad day. BUT, Jay Crownover is writing a spinoff series called The Saints of Denver. YAY! I feel like the description of Asa above is kind of deceptive. Asa is struggling with who he is. He still feels like the same guy he was before, the criminal, the scam artist. People keep telling him that he’s changed, but he doesn’t see it. He’s trying to be good. But deep down he feels like he’s going to slip up eventually. And truthfully, I expected him to slip up or at least be tempted with a bit more than he was. But everyone else was right, deep down, he really has changed.

Also, Royal’s part of the description was a bit deceptive. She can’t stop thinking about Asa because she feels like he’d be the perfect distraction for her having to process and deal with the guilt she feels over her partner getting injured on duty. Royal really just wants a one night stand with Asa—at first. And Asa nails it on the head that in some ways, Royal wants this as a punishment to herself, not because she actually wants him. And this is something that I struggled with. I’m tired of new adult books that start with a physical/sexual attraction only. I would have really hoped that Asa and Royal could have delved into some emotional stuff before going there physically.

I was trucking along and enjoying Asa but I predicted several things pretty early on. And then of course I get to about the 70% mark and stupidity enters the picture. The conflict seemed so….easily fixable and easily avoidable. I think this is a trap that new adult books fall into often. There has to be something for the couple to overcome so the smallest things are turned into these huge issues that could easily be addressed or even avoided altogether.

3 Platypires for Asa by Jay Crownover

The final book in the Marked Men series and I won't lie, I'm actually sad to see it end. I think Jay did a great job with each book. Now that being said, Asa was my least favorite.
I liked the characters of Asa and Royal but I felt the storyline was way too repetitious. I could highlight whole paragraphs where it was just repeating the same thing. Ex: Asa has a bad history and for that he doesn't think he deserves or is good enough for Royal. Those sentiments are repeated A LOT! That isn't the only subject that gets repeated either which I found quite frustrating.
When the story wasn't repeating itself. I actually liked it and thought it was good. Asa and Royal are a good couple and the sex scenes were pretty intense. I also enjoyed the epilogue which tied up the series pretty nicely.

Even though Asa was my least favorite, I would still highly recommend this series and can't wait to read the spin off.
