About the Artist

WILLIE COLON Like many of his boricua compatriots, Willie Colón was born and raised in the heart of the Latin neighborhood of the Bronx. It was this very neighborhood where he drank from the fountain of teen angst, sharing with his compatriots his sorrows and aspirations. This inspired in him a profound devotion to his cultural roots. Musician, composer, arranger, singer, producer, director, and community leader: Colón wore all of these hats, gaining recognition as both an artist and a human being. He started out in the music business at such a young age that his mother had to sign his first contract for him. Ever since then his career has covered all facets of music, as proven by his prolific discography, which boasts more than 30 million records sold. Such sales earned him countless gold and silver-selling albums, as well as several Grammy nominations. Colón is also known for his participation on albums with such names as Celia Cruz, Rubén Blades, Héctor Lavoe, and many others. Willie Colón, known for his excellence, and well aware of the power and influence he held over the mass media, established himself as a civil- and community-rights leader. For his contributions, he won recognition and awards, such as the plaque that bears his name on the Bronx's "Walk of Fame." It was this very city that was birthplace and home to many of his compatriots who came to the United States in search of a better future. WILLIE COLON

I had heard very good comments of this production since long ago and, in many opportunities, I was close to get one of those old vynil-made records but I didn't. For more than 30 years, I have listened to hundreds of times songs like "Canto a Borinquen", Traigo la Salsa", "La Murga Panameña" and the song which I like the most: "Aires de Navidad" (far the most famous of all of these group of salsas in my country, Perú). However, it is not the same to hear these songs evenly one here and other there than hearing all of them together, in the sequence presented in this CD. The context of them is really impressive and this makes the difference. This CD is really an outstanding production. The sound recorded is original all along and the presentation of the CD is quite illustrative, accompanied by a small brochure that gives us a good view of the history of these salsas and their meaning as a part of the culture of Puerto Rico. Dear friends, if you are fans of Salsa, buy it new or used but don't lose the pleasure of listen to all this precious music and let you be "assaulted" by Willie Colon, Hector Lavoe and their friens of Fania,no matter if Christmas time has gone..

Its a must have.

This here is one of the best albums by the Puerto Rican trombonist, Willie Colon. Nothing but classic salsa. Every track is worth listening to over and over again, even the introduction! If you love salsa and are in the Christmas spirit, pick up this sweet album from one of my fellow countrymen.

Released towards the end of 1971, this Christmas Lp celebrates the traditional Puerto-Rican music: el aguinaldo. The smooth and almost emotional voice of the singer Héctor LaVoe, the impressive talent of the trombone player and composer Willie Colon and the fine solos of the cuatro player Yomo Toro instantly turned it into a classic. A precious record for salsa fans.
