Second, the list of advice allows each new business owner to tailor it to suit his/her own business needs. The book emphasizes that each business owner is different, so is each business. There are no one-size-fits-all, cooker-cutter business solutions that work for all businesses. The book is organized by chapters woven coherently together by 26 business decision questions. Each new business will be defined differently, as well uniquely, by how the 26 questions are answered which will, in turn, lead to different solutions.
Last, but not the least, while reading through the book, the reader will undoubtedly feel that most of the advice given appears to be plain and simple, yet they are powerful and are often overlooked in the real world. One particular sentence that jumped out of the page, when the author discusses Yo-Yo Ma’s success, says, “He pays attention to the basics so he can create the extraordinary (p.45).” No matter in which stage of a business development, never forget or overlook the basics of a business.
In sum, the author offers practical and valuable advice on how to scale a start-up business. The advice reflects her own enriched experience of working with major US corporations, such as Oracle and Adobe. Business owners at any level and/or at any stage of their business development, could find the list of advice beneficial.
She has validated so many things that I tell my clients on a day-to-day basis and she eloquently wraps it in a framework that's easy to follow. I specifically applaud her for calling out the importance of using experts as sherpas, stopping at the various camps to take stock, and highlighting the Valley of Disconnects. Although this book provides a great "how to" guide, its true value is helping entrepreneurs to use a framework to manage their business as they reach new peaks well as their emotional intelligence as they deal with the ebbs and flows of being a founder, and to understand when, why and how to invest in a Client Success program.
Honestly, there are too many great tips, tools, and thought-provoking questions for me to mention them all. Some of my highlights are:
- Lifetime value of a client, not just cost of acquisition
- Overcoming the loneliness most entrepreneurs feel
- Acknowledging that there are so many valleys of disconnects, each with their own tools
- Recruiting CX experts onto your board
- Client success program, not just marketing speak
- Elevating from a point solution to a product category
Definitely an important read for any entrepreneur at any stage of their company!
Helen stripped everything down to the 25 fundamental decision questions you need to ask yourself.
These questions are not new but it is put in the appropriate context of when you need to ask them, which is so critical. You would not want to pull a parachute rip cord before jumping or pull it too close to landing! Sounds obvious, but why do so many startups still fail to ascend. Helen makes it easy to remember these decision points by sharing her years of experience in a structured framework of climbing a mountain.
The reader will appreciate that Helen gets right to the point of her advice with short memorable stories. It’s like having her as a sounding board and seeing the next turn around the corner.
I appreciate the fact that the insights is not just a one sided view of product, marketing, sales, support, customer success, or professional services.
This is one of those books that can stay on your desk and not the shelf.

Instead of bombarding you with frameworks, Yu offers up a series of questions that you will ask yourself as you move along your business-building journey. In addition, she uses the entertaining device of reflecting back upon her experience climbing Everest as a metaphor for what it is like to grow a fledgling business.
