Editorial Reviews

2012 album from the Chapel Hill-based Indie band. Ascenseur Ouvert! is broken French for Elevator Open! and is meant as a command. The Manx are too slow moving a band for the stairway, so they have bypassed it for the elevator. Up! To where? To inspiration, to newness. To take a hold of one's own destiny and realize that victory is not in sound scans or opening up for Coldplay but in a baby's first step or the pleasure of fixing a leaking sink in your own house. The relief of getting off work at midnight and running into an old friend. Of still being tuned in to the celestial radio station and giving its harmonies form.

If you're already partial to the Manx, and you're weighing up whether to buy this one, have no fear: The high standards are maintained, and excelled in places. Sonically you're looking at something in the area of the last two albums, which should come as no surprise. But, here's a guarantee: No fewer that five of these 14 tracks are certified skin-shiverers (1, 5, 6, 11, 13, for my money).
If you're a newcomer, what you're going to get here is 14 chilled melodies, laid back, like you might sit on a horse's back trotting though the countryside. Feelgood tunes, yes, largely acoustic with warm keyboards and pleasant swirling harmonies. Great for a summer on the lawn, get me? All reeeally nicely and caringly structured, and always a pleasure.
Added extra: Ryan's back with a couple of his light-blue tunes, which adds a very welcome variation on Bills more chocolatey laconic tones. Synesthetics will know what I mean.
I'd actually give this four-point-seven-five if I could: the production, though fine, isn't always perfect: The vocal on 'Minos Maze' seems unintentionally fuzzy, and the chorus is a bit sharp, unless my ears need tuning again. But hey, that minor point is massively outweighed by another tar-heeled Manx classic.

Most people looking here are probably already owners of other things by them. This is one the most eclectic and awesome bands I know. They're my go to when I need music to move with me. It's great.

My first Manx experience was their self titled album and while that album was a bit hit a miss for me (see my review for more details) I thought I would give them another chance.

I'm glad I did. This is album is much improved when compared to "overcoat" but still a few songs kind of bring the album down just a bit, hence the 3.5 stars instead of 4. "Black & Tan" is the kind of mellow song that Belle and Sebastian would be proud of, but where this album really takes off is the song that follows Black & Tan, "Well, Whatever." I love this song. It's more uptempo than I'm used to hearing from the Manx, and it's by far my favorite song of theirs...on any album...which is only two albums... but it's an awesome song. However, not all the songs on this album live up to this standard, in fact a few of the songs kind of lack emotion and just kind of meander about. I believe that was part of my problem with "Overcoat Recordings." The song "Crest" comes to mind as an example of one of the meandering songs.

Still worth a listen, if not just for "Well, Whatever."

Key Track: "Well, Whatever"
