Review

“In Chip Jacobs' true-crime, The Ascension of Jerry, we are whisked back to LA’s Kodachrome world of the Seventies. Through the eyes of the protagonist, Jerry, the “bright colors and greens of summer” quickly change to the real life black-and-whites of mayhem and murder. But, this is not just another Hollywood Whodunit. In the end we find it is really about one man’s search and struggle to find his own personal truths and redemption. Well written and highly recommended.” —Steve Hodel, LAPD Hollywood Homicide detective (ret.) and Bestselling author, Black Dahlia Avenger: A Genius for Murder

“Jacobs delivers a seductive tour of an L.A. rife with murder-for-hire plots, political corruption and sociopathic schemes. Against this backdrop the young Schneiderman comes of age, to ultimately emerge as the last man standing. A terrific book—I couldn’t put it down!" —Stephen Jay Schwartz, Los Angeles Times bestselling author of Boulevard and Beat

“Chip Jacobs’ chops as an accomplished newspaperman are on brilliant display in The Ascension of Jerry, a delightfully off-kilter true-crime tale of a hero (sorta) who is neither especially loathsome nor lovable … maybe just lucky to get out alive. Jacobs’ prose is intimate, darkly funny, and crisp as he follows the twisted path that leads SoCal businessman Jerry Schneiderman through a series of weird events—including crossing paths with some dumb-ass hitmen and some burning corpses—only to emerge as a merry prankster with a jones for social activism. (If you haven’t yet deduced that this book is not your Mama’s supermarket true-crime trash, then you’re doing it wrong. But here’s the thing: Jacobs’ ear for a good story is pitch perfect, and he tells it with all the smoggy pastel colors of post-noir LA. The Ascension of Jerry isn’t an old song in a new key, but an entirely new song about crime, fear, and a weird kind of redemption that could only happen in the general vicinity of Hollywood. Jacobs is a genuine writer, not a wannabe scribbler. He knows what makes us keep turning pages. So for those few true-crime readers who like their mayhem served up in a sumptuous story, seek this one out.” —Ron Franscell, celebrated true-crime author

"Chip Jacobs uses his boundless reporter’s energy and well-honed sense of Southern California to tell a gripping tale of serial mayhem and the curious life of Jerry Schneiderman. It’s reassuring to see the right writer was paying attention.” —David Willman, Los Angeles Times Pulitzer winning investigative reporter and author of The Mirage Man: Bruce Irvins, the Anthrax Attacks, and America’s Rush to War

“Chip Jacobs explores the underbelly of an L.A. murder-for-hire ring that leaves many dead and a successful space planner, Jerry Schneiderman, so affected by PTSD that he embarks on a widespread muckraking campaign that targets major political forces in Los Angeles and beyond. Pitched as a “roots of Occupy story” (aside from Mark Twain’s, of course), The Ascension of Jerry: Murder, Hitmen, and the Making of L.A. Muckraker Jerry Schneiderman will leave you closing your blinds and forever looking behind your back for the crazed psycho-killer disguised as an ordinary blue collar guy.” —Foreword magazine staff pick

“The pay for some deals is wonderful, but the drawbacks that can come along with it may be too much to swallow. The Ascension of Jerry: Murder, Hitmen, and the Making of L.A. Muckraker Jerry Schneiderman follows the life of Jerry Schneiderman, whose (space planning) career prospered, then quickly spun out of control when his business (partner) ate a bullet via assassin. Fearing for his life, he was on the run for (months), before he found his … life’s calling. The Ascension of Jerry is an enticing true tale of getting one’s life back in the midst of … skullduggery, highly recommended.” —Midwest Book Review

Jerry Schneiderman would be 61 today, May 27, 2012, however we lost him a short while ago. I thought I knew Jerry well, even though I did not meet him until 2002. Chip Jacobs fills in some of the blanks. I worked as Jerry's' Construction Superintendent for quite a few years. My wife, daughter, and two of my sons also worked with Jerry. One would think that having so many eyes and ears, especially those of family members, available, there would be few secrets. For me there was always a mysterious side of Jerry. I and my family socialized with Jerry and his family. From the beginning of our relationship, I knew Jerry was brilliant. He had the ability to find a distressed property, put together a group of investors, and turn a Sows' Ear into a Silk Purse. Even though he wore an insulin pump and knew he was living on borrowed time due to his diabetes, he lived large and seemed fearless. Chip Jacobs' book gives me some idea of Jerry's' background. I understand better some of the personality traits that I saw in Jerry. Jerry chose to take the high road. He had a way with people that brought out their best qualities. He managed to surround himself with good, hardworking, ethical people. Once I read Chips' book I know why. If you enjoy a murder/mystery/crime story, with some psychodrama mixed in, you'll love "The Ascension of Jerry", especially if you like to read about Los Angeles/Hollywierd, and, you'll get to know Jerry too ! ! !

Chip Jacobs is to be congratulated and thanked for his perceptive description of Jerry Schneiderman because not many have the fortitude to keep up with him, much less appreciate Jerry's wicked sense of humor that arose from the depths of terror that he, his family and those of us lucky to have had him as a life-long friend shared during those gut-wrenching days. After reading this true-life debacle that wends its way like Lombard Street in San Francisco to as close to satisfactory ending as could be expected, I learned many facts of which I was unaware at the time this occured, though this read is deja vu all over again for me. I met Richard through the two yenta decorators, and it is because of his slipshod attention to detail in failing to keep an appointment with me that I met Jerry who has had my back ever since Richard died. Sadly, Jerry's death was not unexpected, but a shock nonetheless. I find myself asking, "What would Jerry do?" each time I confront a new problem in my life. I find myself smiling as I confidently face the issue with the same creative aplomb I learned from Jerry and go on about my business.

The Ascension of Jerry is a great read. It's a compelling story of a man who found his true calling after enduring personal tragedy, that's carefully woven with a lot of modern Los Angeles history. It's packed with insight on politicians and public figures still on the stage today. But mostly it's the portrait of a hero named Jerry, who started off like most people primarily focused on personal concerns, but after his business partner was murdered and he was threatened found the bravery to dedicate himself to helping others. He changed lives for the better.

Jacobs is a talented writer who tells this painstakingly researched true crime story in true novel-esque fashion that keeps the reader turning the pages. Put this one on your summer reading list. Once you hit the beach and open it up, you won't be able to put it down.

The Ascension of Jerry reveals a chilling side of life most of us don't think of; how simply one decision can place the lives we love in danger. I didn't know of Jerry Schneiderman before this, but the consequentions of our actions can be haunting. It illustrates how one man's greed can lead to redemption and a reversal of values and priorities. Prepare to stay up all night - you won't put it down. Can't wait for the movie.

I knew "Richard" well (real last name different than in the book.) I was a friend for many years from childhood. As an adult, my wife and I spent lots of time with Richard and his first wife.

I was not in business with him. I was surprised to learn a "different side" than the "Richard" I knew. The factual information I received before the book was written matched the facts in the book. I didn't know "Jerry."

The book is gripping. I "couldn't put it down." It was a sad end to a friend.
