Editorial Reviews

"The Ascension: The Sequel" is a new recording written and recorded in 2009 and released in 2010. This recording is for the same instumentation of four guitars, bass and drums as was the original Ascension that was released in 1981. The pieces on this cd are: "The Tone Row That Ruled The World", "Carbon Monoxide", "Quadratonic", "Lesson No. 3 (Tribute to Steve Reich)", "The Blood" and "Lost Chords" It was recorded and mixed by James Farber in the same studio and the same room as the original Ascension. The cover is also by Robert Longo who did the cover for the original Ascension.

Format: Audio CD
Glenn Branca is a force to be reckoned with, and in this album he again brings the mad genius power he is so known for. For those unfamiliar with the composer, Branca takes a bunch of detuned guitars, turns the amps way too high, and explores every nook of dissonant possibility with sounds that can pierce the soul. He's not interested persay in melodies or catchy hooks or really anything that anyone has ever done musically. He is always looking to stretch the possibilities of sound and shatter any definition of music one may have.

With that said, this album shows that Glenn Branca will continue to do what Glenn Branca does; write music that is both light years away and resting in our souls at the same time. Overall, this album harkens back to his earlier days. He dialed back writing long, flowing, complex pieces of music designed for a large number of guitars to writing music for 6 musicians in total. It is tightly structured however and not just background ambience like his "Symphony #2" album. Instead it's much more pointed, direct, and oftentimes angry in mood. Although only 6 musicians play (only 4 guitars), there still is the signature wall of sound akin to Branca's style. This isn't his best work, but it is certainly a very good Branca album. It is similar to the orignial "The Ascension" in tone but very different; while for me it's not as good as "The Ascension, "The Sequel" is still absolutely a worthwhile buy.

(KEEP IN MIND THIS IS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ALBUM THAN THE ORIGINAL "THE ASCENSION" album. THEY ARE BASICALLY UNRELATED ASIDE FROM THE NAMES.

I should mention that I saw Branca premier this album live in NYC. He had 4 guitars, 1 bass, 1 drummer, and he conducted. It was my first time ever seeing him live, and I was blown away.
