A new darkness seeps into New Vigil from the Void, intent on restoring despair and desolation to a world that has forgotten it. The four factions recall their veteran heroes and reawaken the great war machines of the past, as they plan their first in the chaotic ebb and flow of light and dark. The War of Shadows has begun.

This game stands on its own and has everything you need to play. It doesn't necessarily fit the "block" format that previously paired a large set with a complementary small set like previous Ascension releases:
Chronicle of the Godslayer (now just Ascension)/ Return of the Fallen - RoF adds Fate cards which trigger when revealed in the center row.
Storm of Souls / Immortal Heroes - Storm of Souls adds events and Immortal Heroes adds soul gems. You also have trophy monsters which are similar to constructs. Events alter cards and Soul Gems are a small deck of cards that go to your hand and are one time use cards.
Rise of Vigil/Darkness Unleashed - Adds energy cards and a transformation mechanic. Energy is used to power up cards or transform them.
Realms Unraveled/Dawn of Champions - Technically these sets combine but they are both large sets. Realms adds multi-faction heroes/constructs and Dawn adds large player sheets that you level up since you're playing the leader of a faction. You also have Unite which triggers when other cards of that faction are played and Rally which allows you to top deck cards from the center row and either defeat them or acquire them.
With Ascension X we get the addition of 2 mechanics, the first is "dual cost" cards, which you need to spend both power and runes to collect. I really like this addition as it makes for a slightly deeper game and you can't just load up on Mechanics or Mystics to rule the game. The other mechanic is a day/night mechanic which gets determined by the majority of types of cards in the field. Whether it is day or night can activate properties on cards, and adds a nice new dimension into game play.
Of course it's Ascension, which means the player who builds the best deck "machine" with the most synergy will most probably win. Still, after all this time I'm still happy to go on a new Ascension adventure, and the one with Ascension X is one of the more elegant and well crafted of the expansions. You get what you pay for with an Ascension game and the franchise rarely disappoints.
If you are one of those people that doesn't like to buy into card games because of how expensive it gets to keep a current deck, but still love playing card games. This is the game for you. No matter your skill level you are on an even footing with people you play against. You start with the same cards as your opponent and buy cards to build your deck as you go.
