"if all the writings of the desert fathers which teach us concerning watchfulness and prayer were lost and the writings of Abba Isaac the Syrian alone survived, they would suffice to teach one from the beginning to end concerning the life of stillness and prayer. They are the Alpha and Omega of the life of watchfulness andy interior prayer, and alone suffice to guide one from his first steps to perfection." Joseph the Hesychast of the Holy Mountain (1895-1950)
During a difficult time in my life I began reading this book every day. It gave me incredible peace and inner resources. It inspired me to pray and spend more time on what is real: my spiritual path and less time being fearful about the details of my outer life, all of which resolved themselves wonderfully. I was left with Isaac's book which I would not leave behind for anything. another wonderful book is " Elder Paisios of Mount Athos" the story of a modern day mystic and monk of extraordinary insight. Elder Paisios also recommended reading Isaac the Syrian and said that he himself spend several years during which this author was his sole reading companion.
This is the best book representing the writings of St. Isaac when it comes to comprehensiveness. Further, this book is beautiful visually, poetically, psychologically, philosophically, and spiritually.
I have over 1200 books, and have to say that this is one of the top five most beautiful books I have owned (along with The Red Book, Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales (leather bound), The Glorious Constellations: History and Mythology, The Holy Bible with Illustrations from the Vatican Library).
Welcome to psychological and spiritual insight. I read a mere page a day, and even then feel inadequate to move forward as there are still gems from previous pages that I have not fully appreciated.
Unfortunately I have to leave this review where it stands as I am out of time. I will edit and elaborate on this more later.
This is a great treaties on how one can live the Ascetic Life even if one is not a monastic. I highly recommend St. Issac's Homilies to all who are struggling to grow in their daily Christian walk and way of life. Pick up a copy as soon as possible and read one homily a night before bed, even as part of your nightly prayer and devotion time. Its well worth it.
