***I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are 100% my own.***

We’re back in the world of the Rengalla and the Delshie. This time we’re now focusing on Cody and Daughtry. This time it’s one of the twins. Mason, the one who lost his wife and son to the Delshie and the one who would see them all dead. He’s finding himself intrigued by the new receptionist for the healer. Her name is Gabby and she’s the worst at harnessing her magic. Even the ones who’ve recently gotten theirs is better than she is.

What he and everyone doesn’t realize is that she’s hiding a terrible secret. One she’s certain will cause her to be ousted from the group, and she was just starting to feel at home, to make friends. So when Francis the teacher requests her to take private tutoring lessons from Mason, the one who makes a forest of butterflies take flight in her belly, she couldn’t be more freaked out.

This story is pretty short. Especially compared to Cody and Daughtry’s story. But man, do they have chemistry! Mason is intense. Just really intense and Gabby is just so strong. We get to see Daughtry in this story, not so much Cody. We also get to see more Suz….there’s something going on with her, so maybe we’ll get to hear about it soon. We also get to see more Tyler. I really like Tyler. He’s awesome. Just simply awesome. I really can’t say more. I want you to delve into this world for yourself.

Ms. Faber is still weaving this world and making you fall in love with the Rengallan culture. I know this is going somewhere wonderful and I can’t wait to read more books in this series. I’m glad I’ve finally caught up in the series, but I’m sad because I’m finally caught up in the series. So the question is, would I recommend this book? Yes, I would. Again the heat level is more than for kids, but it’s not erotic.

Another great Rengalla story, Elise Faber has such a way with words. I wish I could disappear into their world. Even with all the problems with the Forgotten, the Dalshie, and normal problems couples face it still draws me in. In this story we meet Gabby as she deals with her past and who she is and what she can d because of it. We also see Mason (Mr. Hottie Lex-Tal) which we met in Phoenix Rising. These two were made for each other, but as most couples they bungled through their relationship. Her fighting her past, just as much as he was fighting his. If they can get past their own hang ups, they will have a bond and connection that will surpass their wildest dreams. This is a wild ride, as we see Gabby and Mason, fight themselves, each other, their feelings and the Dalshie. Will it work out or will they be to stubborn to lean on each other. My heart broke for both their pasts as they struggle to heal and deal with what was.

If I had to describe From Ashes in just three words, I would use sexy, sexy, and sexy. I absolutely love Elise Faber’s writing; I devoured Phoenix Rising and Dark Phoenix, and couldn’t wait for From Ashes, the first book in a spinoff series that focuses on background characters from the Phoenix books.

This particular story follows Gabby and Mason, both LexTals (possessors of supernatural powers) who live at the same compound. Gabby has been carrying around a guilty secret for years, and Mason has been carrying around heartache and anguish for centuries. The two of them are like forces of nature on a path bound for collision, and once they do collide, fireworks ensue. Or, more accurately, explode. Fireworks explode.

Mason and Gabby are well-written, multi-dimensional characters. My heart broke for both of them, as they each suffered more than their fair share of loss. Mason is closed-off but he can’t help the pull he feels toward Gabby, and he fights it with everything he has. Gabby is the same; she really just wants to fly under the radar but every time she is around Mason, something seems to happen to bring them together. For example, in the opening scene, Gabby has a precarious Post-It note situation that is pretty mortifying, although Mason just seems bemused.

The sexual tension between Mason and Gabby is palpable and, well, Mason is just hot. He’s brooding and stubborn and smart and prideful which never works in the real world but is somehow always attractive in a fictional setting. Gabby is as equally smart and stunning; she vacillates between stubborn and insecure, as is the case for so many women. I love that Gabby takes things into her own hands at several points throughout the story and calls Mason on his pigheaded behavior.
