Ashes (The Light Bringer Saga) Paperback – September 8, 2013
About the Author
BRANDON AX fell in love with fantasy as child after first devouring the entire Chronicles of Narnia series. Born in New Orleans his early life was spent moving from state to state all along the south. Developing a love for people and their stories he began to pursue a career as an author. After years of tuning his craft he finished his first novel ELEMENTAL. Living in South Carolina with his wife, two children and three dogs, he spends his days dreaming up new worlds and fascinating characters. Hard at work on completing the rest of the series in The Light Bringer Saga, he enjoys the task of molding a story to its completion.

Sophia, Aiden, Sidney, Zander and the rest of the Elementals never seem to catch a break. One of the things I enjoyed about this book was that nothing is really as it seems—not in real life and not in dreams. There are a few characters I didn't expect to see, and enough plot twists here and there that don't allow the reader to become complacent. There is really no predicting of outcomes, even from chapter to chapter, and yet it all fits well and makes perfect sense.
Ax's descriptions of Sophia's dreams and "pathways" is nicely done also. I could easily picture the action and the scenery, whether it involved peaceful moments or all-out battle.
The overall plot moves along nicely, with each book having its own story arc that feels resolved while leaving the reader anxious for what's next in the bigger picture.
Book #3, hurry up!
Sophia's world had been turned upside down the previous year and now she finds herself out of high school with a steady job, surrounded by her wonderful Elemental friends along with Aiden (sigh Aiden!), no more monsters, and with nightmare-free nights.... or so she thinks... As soon as she gets used to her new normal she finds herself in danger once again. BUT this time it isn't just the Dark Ones showing interest in her. Sophia must figure out how to keep herself AND all of her loved ones safe, because this time she finds herself on the opposite side of other Powerful Elementals.
Ashes was impressive and totally surpassed my expectations. I was entertained, sad, happy, and I laughed throughout the book but quite honestly most of the time I was shocked (in a good way). There was enough romance to keep it swoon worthy but not taking over the story, it had well rounded secondary characters, and contained fantastic imagery.
The ending contains a twist I didn't expect. It suddenly takes an unexpected twist that changes the entire landscape of the story. It was something the author had built up to but in a subtle way. I also liked that while this is a series, each book ends without cliffhangers. I mean, it does leave you with a serious intense need for the next book, yes, but no cliffhanger lol
I cannot wait for the third book!!!
Bringing potential answers in at the end and then having the story abruptly stop made me want to throw my Kindle across the room and honestly, that's a good thing, I haven't had this much of a reaction to anything I've read in a VERY long time. Keep 'em coming Brandon!
I have a few guesses about what Sophy will come to be al the end, but I prefer to see how it all fans out.
Totally recommended for a flight reading, as I did. Enjoy!
The twist and turns and excitement and danger make this book an edge of your seat read, while the development of the characters and their relationships makes you want to smile, laugh and even cry at times. This book is an emotional roller coaster, but in a good way. I could not put it down once I picked it up and I know anyone else who reads it will feel the same.
If you want to read a book that makes you feel like you have gone on an adventure with your best friends in tow, then this book is for you.
