Both Beth and Ken are strong, independent people not looking for anything serious out of a a relationship. They consider themselves friends with benefits because neither want a commitment to anyone. Beth maintains control in everything she does as she attempts to overcome her past. This includes her relationship with Gage. She keeps him at bay and does not let him in. The question is, how long will Gage be willing to put up with it?
Hahaha one of my favorite thoughts from her on the subject:
"People get lazy in relationships and don’t try so hard. At first, you’re putting on make-up and shaving your legs and he’s holding in his farts. After a while, your legs look like a cactus and he’s taking a dump with the door open.”
Why minus the half star? Blah I may get unhelpful votes for this but I really really didn't like the part where Gabe talks to Ken about his "first time". It was very detailed and graphic, which would have been totally hot if had been presented in flashback form instead of in conversation. It was just a little hard to imagine a man telling another man in the way that he did. You picture Gabe reading his story to Ken from a Penthouse magazine while Ken has his chin in his hands and listens all wide eyed lol. You'll see what I mean.
BTW I'm writing this review after reading the second book in the series. That's just how I like to do it. You're gonna be shocked, turned on, intrigued, and have your funny bone tickled. Buy it now!
Ashes is by Leslie Johnson who has also written the series EMBERS. Even though this is a new series it involves Ken and Stephanie's friends, Gage and Beth. Gage and Beth seem to be "friends with benefits," although, based on their thoughts, they are not exactly sure about what they are. Neither tell themselves and each other that they don't want a relationship, but, in reality, they are very confused.
One of the things I love about Leslie Johnson's books is that they are written in first person but rotate between each character's thoughts. Therefore we know everyone's thoughts.
This first book focuses on Gage and Beth's backgrounds and how these affect their lives now. It also focuses on how life has changed for Ken and Stephanie.
Warning: The book ends on a cliffhanger. Ms. Johnson does an excellent job of leaving us with the desire to read the next book.
I would also like to place another warning: There is lots of wonderful erotica sex throughout the book. If this is not your thing, please don't buy it. For the rest of us, however, you will love every second of it. Still, another thing I like about this author is that Ms. Johnson manages to combine good sex with lots of exciting content.
This is the first of five books, so I imagine there will be lots of action. Meanwhile, you might want to get the last series, EMBERs, so you can read Ken and Stephanie's story.
