Editorial Reviews

"A most interesting glimpse into the life of an Amish Community in Unity, Maine. The author spent some time there with different families and this book is a documentary of those times. The Amish are known for their simplicity in life as well as their faith. This book takes the reader into some homes, a church service and a 'singing' that occurs at 6 PM.
Some of the things that I learned when reading this book concern the differences between Amish communities. I didn't realize that there was an Old Order Amish as well as a New Order Amish. The manner in which they do the laundry was also interesting to me. Mealtime is a time for bonding which sounds like an excellent way to live. God is taken literally which explains some of their customs. Faith, family and food are the main points in their lives.
Thoroughly enjoyed the pictures in the book. And, the one of the ice house was most intriguing.
This book will allow a reader a first hand glimpse into the life of the Amish community in Unity, Maine..
Highly recommended."

"A refreshing glimpse inside Ashley Emma's writing process. Reading about her in-depth, genuine curiosity and appreciation for the people she met on her adventure into the Amish community felt like an intimate behind-the-scenes tour."
--Marie Schaeller, bestselling author of Breaking the Chains of Silence
"Emma Ashley is a brilliant author. I admire her work. I was wondering what it is like to be Amish and also what it is like to be inside an Amish community. Through her books, she leads the readers into an unknown environment. She does it in a way that does not make me feel lost or left all by myself. She holds the reader's hand all along through the story. Therefore, I recommend you to get a tour with Emma Ashley in her Amish world."

"An intriguing and riveting read! This book gives readers a very rare peek into life in an Amish community. The author personally immersed herself into the Amish life, in order to authentically portray their passion for contentment, simplicity, and faith as the setting for an adventure of a lifetime. While it is an easy read, it is very intriguing and riveting! The author has a way of drawing a reader into every scene and keeping the momentum going. The characters she introduces us to are so real and relatable, despite the fact that they live such distinct lives from what would be considered main stream modern America! In fact, there is a sense of envy that causes an inevitable reflection on what we consider to be necessary and essential in our daily lives. It was a refreshing read!"
--Tracy Lee, author and pastor
"An amazing read, and I thank the author for sharing her story and experience living with the Amish.  It removes the mystery of the Amish, and how they live without the many amenities, we take for granted.  There is much we could all learn from them and most certainly recommend reading this book."
-Marlene Wagner, author
"I LOVE these Amish books by Ashley Emma. They not only grab your interest and keep you reading, they give you a feel like you know a few Amish people and care about them. This is the most powerful step to understanding a culture different from your own. Thanks, Ashley, you have broadened my horizons and you made it fun on the way! There is also a homespun gentleness and honesty about the spiritual side of these differences. If everyone acted like this, Christianity would have a better world view and there would be less hatred in the world. There is nothing more we could ask for from a few books!"
--Chris McKay Pierce, author of Customer Service can be Murder
"If you are looking for insight into the REALITY of daily life in an Old Order Amish settlement then this published, personal journal is for you.
If you prefer the ridiculous, formulaic-driven, pure fantasy of the Amish as portrayed in "Amish Christian Romance" books then this journal may not be for you...
I have been around the people of the Unity Settlement for about a year now and can absolutely state that this journal has captured the flavor of the Unity Settlement and its people as well as their hospitality.
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading the author's interactions with people I have also interacted with.
This journal is a nice tool for those researching the reality of the Amish lifestyle. People who find this journal interesting may want to look into the life and works of Elmo Stoll, the deceased father of the Stoll brothers of Unity, Maine."

"This is a good perspective on the Amish. I have been to Lancaster County PA and you can get a tour and visit the Amish attractions but this author went beyond internet research. She actually lived with the Amish...the only way you could go farther would be to become Amish for a longer period of time. A good book; I read it in one afternoon."

FAQ Interview
Q: What is your book about?
A: Undercover Amish is about Detective Olivia Mast, who was once Amish and is sent to her former Amish community in Unity, Maine, to covertly investigate a murder. While she is there she must also secretly watch over Isaac Troyer, the man she dated as a teenager before she left the Amish. The Amish do not give information to police or even report crimes when they occur, so the only way to get any information about the murder is for Olivia to pretend that she wants to rejoin the Amish and gather information without people realizing it.
Once Isaac finds out she is actually a detective, he has to decide if he is willing to break the rules he's followed his whole life in order to help arrest the killer.
Q: So your biography mentions that you lived with the Amish as part of your research. How did you get in contact with them?
A: Yes, I went to Unity, Maine and stayed with three different Amish families. I originally called a few Amish businesses in Lancaster County, because they do have phones in businesses, and they told me that there was an Amish community right in Unity, Maine that I could go to. So I called an Amish business there, left a message, and that family invited me to stay with them.
I was originally going to spend a weekend with that one family, but once the others found out about how I was writing a book and that I wanted to make sure it was accurate, two more families invited me back. I stayed with one of them for an entire week, and went to another family's house for a few days. I also was invited back for one of their weddings.
Q: What did you do there?
That was quite the experience. All Amish communities vary and can have different rules, but this book is entirely based on how the Amish of Unity live. It was one of the best experiences of my life and I am so glad I got to go before I got married and had children. I followed them around everywhere and did everything they did. I helped them with chores, went to church, rode in buggies, canned applesauce, chased turkeys, and had a lot of fun.
Q: So they were okay with you writing about them?
A: Well, they were actually very happy that I was doing my research. They actually do not usually allow typical Amish romance novels because they usually falsely portray the Amish, especially in the area of romance. They were happy that I was making sure the book would be accurate and realistic. I of course changed all last names, but many characters in my books are based on my friends in Unity. Some of them even read the book I wrote about my experience there, and that one is called Ashley's Amish Adventures.
Q: Why do you think Ashley's Amish Adventures is a bestseller?
A: I think people are really curious about and envy the peaceful Amish way of life and that is why the Amish book genre is booming!
