About the Author
Norm Yip was born and raised in the small farming community of Nipawin, Saskatchewan, in the agricultural heartland of Canada. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree (cum laude) at the University of Saskatchewan, he continued his studies at the University of Toronto, whereby he obtained a Bachelor of Architecture degree. In 1994, he moved to Hong Kong and worked for two architectural firms before deciding to pursue his greater interest of photography and art. Since then, Norm has had numerous exhibitions showcasing his paintings, graphite drawing and photography. His photography of Asian men has appeared in numerous publications, most recently The Romantic Male Nude by James Spada and The Best of International Nudes Photography III by Feierabend Unique Books. His clients include The Hong Kong Trade Development Council in photographying the 2013 Hong Kong Dance Festival, Arena Swimwear (Asia), and The Art Newspaper for Art Basel Hong Kong. He has had the privilege of photographing notable celebrities such as director Zhang Yi Mou, performing artists Ricky Martin, Jennifer Lopez, Jamiroquai and Rain. Rarely bored, Norm is a proud owner of a 25-year-old Turkish Angora cat and continues to work and live in the vibrant city of Hong Kong.

In the gradually more relaxed atmosphere of the 21st century, a time when laws and traditions and social mores change frequently, the presentation of the photography of the male nude has not only gained in appreciation in the many books devoted to the subject, but also in the museum exhibitions which are electing to focus on photographs of the male nude form. And in retrospect Norm Yip's three volumes of the Asian Male parallel that acceptance. He is becoming accepted as one of the masters of male nude imagery in perhaps the most difficult arena for presenting his eloquent images - the Asian world. But it is to his credit that he has chosen his own vocabulary, a conversation between the artist and model, that lifts his art to a higher less controversial level. Yip's achievements now echo that above mentioned 5th century Chinese pinhole camera that was the beginning. And this volume is his finest work to date, Asian men from many countries all in command of the beauty of the human male physique - and Norm Yip has captured it all. Grady Harp, November 14
