Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—A vivacious child and her father share an early autumn stroll. "Ask me what I like," she says. Dad's dutiful answer is printed in purple: "What do you like?" Energetically she answers with a list. Sometimes dad presses for details, "Geese in the sky? Or geese in the water?" She answers, "I like geese in the sky. No, in the water. I like both. Ask me what else I like," she demands, seeing something new she wants to tell him about. So they proceed through their day, celebrating the brief but precious time when children are gaining a sense of self and exploring the power that comes with it. The patience required to converse with a small person who wants to dictate every part of the interaction is sure to be familiar to parents, but the poetic text rises above the mundane and captures the beauty, energy, and innocence of these conversations and holds them up for readers to appreciate without becoming saccharine or trite. Lee's lively, colored-pencil drawings are a perfect match to the text. The line drawings are similar in style to those in Wave (2008) and Shadow (2010, both Chronicle), but Lee expands from the single-color palette she employed in those titles to a full spectrum of bright autumn colors. VERDICT A first choice for libraries, especially those looking to expand their selection of father-as-caregiver stories.—Anna Haase Krueger, Ramsey County Library, MN

* "The patience required to converse with a small person who wants to dictate every part of the interaction is sure to be familiar to parents, but the poetic text rises above the mundane and captures the beauty, energy, and innocence of these conversations and holds them up for readers to appreciate without becoming saccharine or trite."

* "Their simple back-and-forth dialogue speaks volumes about their strong father-daughter bond. As endearing and joyful as it is to read Waber's words aloud, it is Lee's illustrations that make this title truly special...Sublimely satisfying."
Kirkus, starred review

"This vicarious outing is an excellent model of one-on-one interaction that might inspire young listeners to form their own questions. An easy text for new readers, it could also help tuck in a toddler with a sweet good night."
—Horn Book Magazine

"Lee's expressive artwork has a naive feel, well suited to Waber's childlike narration...the love this father and daughter share comes through loud and clear."
—Booklist

* "The easygoing verbal exchange and affectionate visuals celebrate a close father-daughter relationship while recognizing beauty in everyday simplicity."

"Ask Me" by Bernard Waber is about a little girl and her father
and the simple things they encounter on their walk on a beautiful fall
day. No plot, nothing dramatic occurs, and there are no messages other
than the sheer enjoyment of being together. The illustrations are gorgeous
and exuberant, and one is swept along in their pleasure. This book would
be a wonderful addition to any child's library (3-8).

This is a colorful bedtime story with engaging art. Children will want to study the pictures. It's about a daughter and father asking questions and just conversing about what the daughter likes. At the end she gets a gentle tuck-in and goodnight kiss from her dad. Ask me what I like can be a good conversation starter. There isn't much plot in this story - more of a dialogue.

The colors are vibrant and illustrations are detailed.

You could then discuss what the child in your family likes.

My children really like this book. They found humor in the back and forth conversation between the father and child that clearly shows that she is the apple of his eye. Also, we always love Suzy lee's illustrations - they capture a sense of wonder.

In this quiet picture book, a little girl tells her father about her different “I likes” before bed. This soft story is a must see for bedtime, for young children, ages 3-6. Readers will be sure to want to share their own special set of likes.

As a father with a four year-old daughter, I was excited to order this book and share it with my little girl. The words and text are quite fine and we both laughed at all the similarities between the book and how we speak to each other. My only critical comment is that the illustrations are not of the same quality as the story. The color scheme has its own attractiveness, but the line drawings are extremely simple. The illustrator's line is often floating across a white background struggling to find definition for the jawline or other details. The characters are bland, without any memorable features, and do nothing to establish an emotional connection to the story.
