Splendor came in the mail just four days ago and we have already logged eight plays so far. We LOVE this game! It scales really well too. My wife and I had a blast playing this as a 2P, then we took it to our gaming group where it was played as a 3P and 4P...each time as fun as the last. The artwork is also beautiful.

The Game Overview: As a wealthy Renaissance merchant, acquire mines and transportation, hire artisans and woo the nobility. Create the most fantastic jewelry to become the best-known merchant of them all! Acquire precious stones to trade them for development cards. Use development cards to acquire more gem stones. Use your gems and gold to create the most fantastic jewelry, and appeal to the nobles to gain the prestige you need to win.

While that description from the manufacturer is all true, it makes the game sound much more complicated than it is. This thing has a two page rulebook, folks...and it plays in about 30 minutes! Basically it's a card drafting game where you trade chips for cards. The cards then allow you to acquire higher value cards and gain victory points. Acquire enough of the right cards and you get a visit from a Patron, earning you even more victory points. First person to 15 points, wins.

Game Play: Game play in Splendor is incredibly smooth. The mechanics are very simple, but there's no shortage of strategy here. You need to keep an eye on all three rows of cards and the Patron tiles to formulate a path to victory and that can be tricky as cards are constantly being bought and refreshed...and as the number of players goes up, so does the amount of attention you have to pay to everyone else's strategy. Excellent middle weight game that plays very quickly.

Players can do one of two things every turn - collect chips or purchase gem sources. There are multiple ways to collect chips and the gem sources act as currency themselves to aid future purchases. The last ingredient are merchants that are awarded to the first player who has the correct number and type of gem sources.

So why is such a simple game so good? First the gem sources are tiered from basic, cheaper sources to 3rd level, very expensive sources. The more expensive sources are worth victory points, which are the objective of the game.

Thus the game is a race to get the required number of victory points (15) while building sufficient gem sources and collecting enough chips to actually be able to get those victory points.

The limited sources and chips assures plenty of player interaction and hard decisions. The limited set of choices keeps the game moving along briskly. The use of shuffled decks for the gem sources means that every game is different.

The whole is a game that plays in 30-60 minutes tops and delivers plenty of challenging decisions every turn.

This game was nominated for the Spiel des Jahres in Germany and came in just behind Camel Up.

One last note... The game comes with very nice bits (real poker-style chips for example), but should still be available for $30-35 if you look around. It went out of stock for a while, hence the higher prices you sometimes see. Just be patient or shop around. You shouldn't pay $70-80 for this game, however much you might like it!
