Go On a Spotting Safari
Be on the lookout for creatures of the land, sky, and sea. Designed especially for ages 4 to 7, the Junior edition of the popular card game Spot it! has an adorable animal theme that kids love. This travel-friendly matching game can be played five different ways.
How to Play
Spot it! Jr. Animals is played with 31 cards that are each decorated with six colorful animals ranging from the cuddly to the exotic. The animals may vary in size and position, but there is always one, and only one, animal match between any two cards. The aim of the games is always the same: be the first to spot it. The mini games vary in challenge level, starting with the simplest game, “Twins,” which has players racing to find the match between two cards. The first to call it out wins the hand, and then two new cards are played. The player with the most cards wins. In other games, players try to get rid of cards or even look for matches between three cards. Easily adaptable to age and ability, Spot it! Jr. Animals can be played competitively or cooperatively, at a fact pace or while taking your time. But don’t be fooled by the Jr. status, the variety of images will challenge the eyes of all ages!
Learn While Having Fun
Your child will learn to name over 30 animals, expanding their vocabulary and inspiring their curiosity about the animal kingdom. This is a great game to work on visual perception, speech-language skills, and sharpen cognitive processing speed. Handling the round cards exercises children’s fine motor skills as well. Playing Spot it! Jr. is a wonderful way to teach good sportsmanship, turn taking and other important social skills.
The game cards are stored in a durable tin canister that is easy to toss into a backpack or purse, so you can take the fun with you wherever you go. Doctor’s waiting rooms and restaurants will become the perfect opportunities to play a few rounds.

Spot It consists of a hand sized metal tin with a snug fitting lid and a deck of round cards. Each card has a set of different pictures – some words, some symbols, all dependent on the version you are playing. The most simple way to play the game is to turn two cards over at a time, players search for the one picture or symbol that the cards have in common. It sounds so simple but the kids beat me more often than not – younger eyes move more quickly! The game is fast paced and fun and challenging enough to keep adults and kids alike entertained. No reading needed so perfect for younger kids too!
We have the Spot It Junior Animals version of this game as well but I think that most kids would be fine with the version labeled for older kids and adults.
One of the biggest pros for me is even if one of the cards falls behind the bookshelf, the monster under the bed steals it or it gets torn, you can still play the game. How many games in your basement are basically useless since a card is lost or the green cherries are missing in action?
I find myself suggesting this game when the kids want to have a game night - so much better than the one thousand nine hundred and sixty third round of Candyland. Or Hi-Ho Cherry...please don't make me try to find all those green cherries again.
5 stars for Spot It from us!
When we first started it, I would tell her this is the word can you find the pic that goes with it. She would sound it out and be very happy when she would get it. After she got better on that I would tell her which card had the word and which card had the pic. Now she is getting to the point where she can play it without needing to always be told which card has the word on it, some she recognizes, some she identifies based on pattern and other times sounding them all out.
If you have never played any of the spot it games, do not buy this first. Get the original version first, have your child love that one before starting on this one.
The Spot It instructions come with 3 mini party games with very easy-to-understand instructions. (If you grab the Spot It game with the hand, those instructions give you 2 more games.) Of course you, or better yet the kids, can come up with more games to play.
Basic game-play involves matching the item on both cards. The Basic English version is the most difficult because it involves matching not just the same visual shape, but sometimes you must match a word with a picture.
Why I absolutely love this for ESL:
1. It's a fun game and the kids all like it.
2. If I find a match first, I can use phrases such as 'same picture/word' or 'this one is a picture, this one is the word'.
3. It forces kids who don't know how to read or who have trouble reading to actually learn to recognize words (and I make them ask me 'what's this' if they want me to read the word for them).
4. For kids who really really can't read, often the word is the same color as the object, so if they're clever enough to figure that out, the kids who can't read can beat the kids who can, which is funny. (Because matching colors is faster than reading words, but the kids who can read will try to read the word first.)
5. The vocabulary is pretty basic but great. e.g. moon, sun, rain, fish, doll, girl, boy, kite, cow, horse, house (they always mix those two words up).
While there are several versions of Spot It and I own almost all of them, the Basic English version is the best for ESL. I would very much like more versions of the game like this -- and I would buy them all. Really.
The tin makes for easy storage and something the kids can roll across the table, and the cards have proven resilient to frequent play. I thought for sure the kids would bend them, but thanks to the way the game is played, I've had no problems.
If you are teaching ESL to kids (~4-13 years old), I highly recommend Spot It! Basic English.
