Editorial Reviews
Death Cab for Cutie's 10th studio album, Asphalt Meadows, is pressed on 180-gram vinyl. Vinyl comes with a limited-time digital download card. The album follows the band's 2018 album Thank You for Today. The lead single, "Roman Candles," "is about the crippling, existential dread that goes hand in hand with living in a nervous city on a dying planet. And that the only way to be in the moment is to let it all go."

My favorite track on this album is "Pepper" -- a bounding, bittersweet breakup tune that is one of their best both musically and thematically. I love how the instrumental layering is punchy, clean, and occasionally underpowered -- the genius of which makes you long for more, and fuller. "Rand McNally" unexpectedly reminded me of my seven cross-country drives during college more than three decades ago(!). "Wheat Like Waves" kinda does too, along with the vastly changing priorities of parenthood. "Here to Forever" sounds like it could have come straight from New Order's album "Brotherhood." Interesting thoughts therein. "I Don't Know How I Survived" seems intended more as a metaphorical musing, but I can relate in a more literal sense. Somehow, Death Cab for Cutie manages to make me feel like a teenager again (in a good way), while also mustering some gratitude for the wistful perspective that comes with age and experience. Don't let the light fade...

One tendency however is that, having seen them live, I note those performances are much more dynamic than their studio work. Would like to see some of that power come through in their next studio effort.
