The cool thing with AC is the gameplay is constantly evolving with each title, usually in a good way. The downside is that controls take a bit to figure out and use effectively. Your approach to a game changes as well, which is a credit to Ubisoft which could just grind these out with the same game engine.
For those that are into the whole pirate genre, they will love this game. I'm kinda meh about pirates so whatever. The naval aspect of this game is cool and adds a whole new level to the series. Unfortunately I suck at most of the battles at sea. I attack one frigate and before I finish it off two more appear out of nowhere and I die. and die, and die again. Seems I'm better off fighting on land than at sea.
The story is engaging and has enough to keep you interested. There are the usual AC "follow without being detected" and some new missions such as recruiting sailors for your ship. Visually the game is very nice although I think the locales are kind of boring compared to other games that were set in Italy and France - that's just my preference though.
Others have commented about the "openness" of the game compared to other AC titles. I know that there seem to be less "mission accomplished, now do this" events as in earlier games. However, I think any of the Assassin's Creed games give you quite a bit of freedom to explore if you understand that you can skip the story missions and travel, explore, take on side missions, etc. and the main story missions will always be waiting for you. I missed that on my first AC title and only the second time playing it did I have a lot more fun with it as I took the game at my pace.
I've taken a break from Black Flag as I was frustrated with getting my butt kicked in sea battles but getting the itch to get back into it (I'm just a so-so gamer so this is a common occurrence - I go back and forth between games regularly depending on my suckiness with any one title). I have seen enough game previews and walkthroughs by Ubisoft that this is a solid game that really raises the bar on the whole series.
