Geilenkirchen was the first battle on German soil to be fought by the British since Minden in 1759. For them, it was just one more battle on the way to Berlin, but for the American 84th Division, it was a first faltering step into war and a bitter lesson in the attrition and savagery of combat. The story is told by the men who were there – the British, the Americans, and the Germans who were fighting desperately for their homeland. Neither side was victorious - both lost more men than they could afford and paid a heavy price in young lives for a few miles of ground.

About the author

Ken Ford was born in Eastleigh, Hampshire, England and left North End Secondary School in 1960. After three years in the Physics Department of Southampton University, he left to work his way around Europe, living the free life on the road. He then became a telecommunications engineer in Southampton (to support his lovely wife Valda and daughters Amanda and Joanne) and spent 29 years at the pointed end until, in 1992, he became disillusioned with working for a living and opened a bookshop in Romsey, Hampshire. He also wrote books. He now lives in Southampton, drinks red wine (in moderation), annoys his three grandchildren Katelyn, Adam and Joseph and continues to write books (37 to date). Oh, and he also supports Southampton FC from his seat in the stands. That's about all there is to know about him.

Best: Written from the regimental or brigade point of view, this small book is packed with tactical infantry combat supported by tanks and artillery. It is well written and includes numerous personal recollections by the soldiers involved. Best of all Ken Ford, a citizen of the UK, treats American and British forces with an even hand. So many authors tend to side with their own nationality. Photos, maps, and an order of battle (minus German forces) were included. The book takes the reader into the rain, cold, mud, blood, and fear of enemy artillery.
Worst: The German side of the battle is covered, but not as extensively as the Allied forces. The book focuses on the combat arms and lacks detailed analysis of support forces such as engineers, supply, signal, medical, etc.
Conclusion: A great read for anyone with connections with the 43rd or 84th Divisions. Also anyone interested in military history, tactical maneuver, stresses of combat on men. Assault of Germany, The Battle for Geilenkirchen, looks at a single battle in the larger war known as World War II. Sometimes smaller is better.
