The simplest way I can describe these games is Contra meets Armored Core. It's a 2D action game with twitch reflexes and crazy bosses, but you're also a clunky mech and you have to play a little more tactically. For the remake, they've overhauled just about everything. All the sprites look fantastic, they've added full Japanese voice-over, the levels are often very different, including a full-level homage to Cybernator, and the gameplay has been overhauled. It plays a lot faster than Cybernator but not quite as fast as Assault Suits Leynos 2 for the Saturn. All in all, it's a best of both worlds and very fun to play. I actually do not like the original in spite of being a fan of the series, so I'm ecstatic to see it brought up to the quality level of its sequels.
Like I said, the game is a little clunky. You move slowly and the controls are clunky but the game gives you a lot of features to even the odds. You have a shield, melee, strafing, dashing, you pick a load-out, etc. There's a lot more depth here than it initially seems. A modern gamer might wonder why they didn't add dual-analog control for aiming but it's a mecha game, it shouldn't be like riding a bike. It's a very rewarding game if you give it a chance and learn the mechanics. I equate these games to pre-symphony Castlevania. The controls might be offputting but the game is designed around them.
Onto what I didn't like... The game is still just 8 levels and you have unlimited continues so you'll torch through the campaign in 2 or 3 hours. All of the games in the series have been this short and I know it's a Genesis remake but it's a little disappointing they didn't put more meat on this game's bones. On a similar note, I'm incredibly disappointed that they didn't add New Game+. I had the same issue with Assault Suits Leynos 2 for the Saturn! The way the game works, you unlock new weapons and parts based on your ranking at the end of levels. New game+ seems like such a perfect fit for this game and it shouldn't have been difficult for them to implement at all. Games like Devil May Cry have been cutting their teeth on this for decades now. It's a blast to go back and get better rankings and unlock everything. Tragically, that's not here at all. When you beat the game, you lose all your unlocks and you're back to zero... It has a level-select and you can unlock things but it doesn't work how it should.
Aside from that, I loved my time with this game and I'm so happy they made it. Again, I do not like the original but I love this remake, that should say something. I'd actually recommend you play Cybernator for the snes first, it's a better game and cheaper (emulate it or it's on the Wii and Wii U virtual console). But if you dig Cybernator or are looking for some great old school 2D mech action, check it out!
Oh... lots of explosions happening on screen, cant forget about that.
I only removed a star because there was no English voice but that's only a minor thing to consider because this is a great game to pass the time and better of all this is a physical copy so buy it before they go out of print.
