Since this was an "assorted" collection of scraps I went into this purchase anticipating maybe a quarter of the pieces would be useful for my immediate plans, half might be useful in future projects, and the final quarter might be too small, odd shaped, or whatever to find a use. The collection I received skewed even better than what I anticipated - I should easily be able to finish my first project and I foresee most of the pieces finding a use eventually. Given the variety of responses in previous reviews I wasn't sure if the negative reviews were due to a bad product or unrealistic expectations by the purchaser. Based on my own experience, I'm leaning towards the latter.
The immediate project I purchased these for was to make a leather wallet-case for an iPhone. I sorted the scraps by color into two piles for each color - "at least iPhone size" and "less than iPhone size". I found three colors in the assortment - black (~60%), brown (~40%), and a single small scrap of red. Both the black and brown had a good number of "at least iPhone size" pieces. Not rectangular (they were all non-regular shapes), just at least one portion bigger than roughly 3" x 5". All of the pieces were soft and pliable and a decent thickness for my use case.
My wife's reaction on seeing the assortment was, "Oh boy, we can make lots of cat toys!" So, I already know how any leftovers will be used.

Received the item with mostly USED leather. see photos.. got bug bites after opening the package. I tried to ask Reed Wholesale if they mix used leather with new scraps but they said these photos are new item.LOL!! The apparent USED scrap leather are the only large pcs in the package, new leather they include is thin strips UNUSABLE. Luckily I was able to return the items.

It's a pretty good deal I guess for the price, but I was hoping for something different.
The scraps are really not as pictured. What I see in the photo looks like small but thick scraps of full or maybe top grain leather. What I received was thin (less than 1mm) sued and sued bonded to vinyl. A few scraps were a little higher quality than the rest.
Depending on your purposes this stuff may be pretty good. It's soft and supple, and would be very easy to cut and sew. I'd been hoping to cover some tool handles and maybe make some small straps. Based on the picture that looked possible, but this stuff is clearly just decorative and wouldn't hold up to a minute of stretch or abrasion.

I was actually encouraged most by the negative reviews. I placed this order to make 2 sheathes and 3 or 4 flint knapping pads so I was hopping for stiffer pieces more like hide. What I got was a variety of odd shaped very soft and supple pieces. Well a couple of the pieces were fine for knapping pads not so much for sheathing material though. However I was planing to order more in the future to make broadhead covers for my arrows, instead I will order in the future for my sheathing material. Overall I would definitely order from them again! I paid very little in my opinion for 2 pounds of random pieces of leather...that's exactly what I got. You just have to be flexible when ordering like this.

I wasn't sure what to expect with this purchase. I bought it with a young friend in mind who enjoys making things out of leather. There are certainly pieces in the bag that he will find useful, but there are also many small pieces that I believe will end up trashed. It would be nice to have a package arrive with 2 lbs. of useable scrap leather instead of 1 to 1.5 lbs. that will provide him enjoyment. In the future, I will most likely find a local leather shop where I can view the scraps prior to purchase.

The assorted leather scraps are great. I had read some of the other reviews before I ordered. Based on a few reviews that mentioned hard leather, I expected the leather to be thicker - the kind used for leather stamping (which is what I wanted this leather for). However, even though it's different than I anticipated, it does fit the description accurately. It's definitely scraps - oddly shaped and with holes - but that also fits the description - assorted leather scraps. My scraps arrived very wrinkled, but I spread them out in a box, and I'm hoping they'll flatten with time. There was a nice variety of colors in my bag. About half were black, and there were lots of various shades of brown & tan. They were basically all very soft and thin. None were thick or hard. Although we might do something different with them than I originally planned, it's nice to have a stash of leather scraps to use for crafts. I'm very happy with the leather.

Exactly what I was searching for. The 2 packages of leather I received were very good pieces. Not the thin craft pieces used for making pouches and such. An older review had claimed the leather was hard (I wondered if that person had ever heard of neat's-foot oil) and not usable. I received one rough piece, but all the pieces can easily be used for knife sheathes or ax holsters/sheathes, I am actually impressed with the larger pieces I received, as I have needed to create a new sheath for am old Bowie knife. I would recommend this product for those looking for scrap cuts from cowhide for heavier projects. Not large enough for gun holsters unless you want to get creative.

I think that Steve is being a bit harsh in his review.
I bought some of this for future projects (knife sheathes, chisel tip protectors, clamps, leather journals, etc) not expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised when it came.
There were an assortment of patches of full-grain vegetable tanned leather ranging from 3-8" by 6-10" in different shades of Russet, Sable, Auburn, Black, and plain brown. These patches were 2-5 mm in thickness, and most of it was very nice. Some of the patches are quite hard and could use some softening.
What makes this nice, is that this is unadulterated vegetable tanned leather. Some other leathers may have nasty fixatives used.
For my purpose, this was more than adequate.
If you need better, you may want to check out Tandy Leather for their inventory.

It's pretty thin leather. Most were tiny little strips 1-2 inches wide. It's what you would expect of scraps made by someone who was very proficient at using the whole hide.
There are a few pieces that could be combined and used for really really small projects. Luckily most of the leather was one of 3 matching colors. The colors were good.
