About the Author

John Cassaday began his professional career with Negative Burn. It wasn t until he showed his portfolio to Mark Waid at San Diego Comic Con that he began receiving job offers from Dark Horse, DC, and Marvel. He eventually collaborated with Joss Whedon on "Astonishing X-Men" which led to more work and even directing an episode of Whedon s television show, "Dollhouse." Most recently he helped relaunch the successful "Star Wars" comic franchise alongside Jason Aaron for Marvel Comics.

Wow, That's all I can say. I only decided to write this review because i noticed this product had no ratings. I'm pretty everything that needs to be said about Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's X-Men run has already been written in numerous other reviews, but here is my two cents:

GET THIS BOOK. Well, this and the first one, you will not regret it. There have been a lot of great or above average X Men runs in the last few years, and a whole lot of unnecessary over bloated crossover events. While Grant Morrison's run on "New X-Men" was pretty good, it cant hold a candle up to this run. Apart from having unbelievable writing and great art, this story returns the X-men to a few core individuals without muddling the book with random characters who don't do too much for the story. I love how Whedon explores the relationship between Emma Frost and Scott Summers, while also exploring internal struggles of each character, for example, Cyclops dealing with his fears of being a inadequate leader. There is a lot of raw emotion in this book, and i love that kind of stuff. like i said in the title, this might be the best x-men arc ever, and for me, this is probably my favorite arc ever put out by Marvel Comics.

Finally, I'm not going to spoil anything, but let's just say the ending is one of the best ones I have ever read in comic books. Buy it for that alone!

I love this run for all of the reasons that I love Whedon. It's dark but sometimes very funny, and the characters are all interesting. I also love that Kitty plays a major role, and I enjoyed the development that Agent Brand had as a character throughout the series. This volume started a little bit slow for me, but I loved it overall.

Want to get somebody into comics? Buy them these 2 trades (Part 1&2 of Whedon's run). These cover the first 25 issues and the giant sized issue of Whedon's AMAZING run on Astonishing X-Men. I have the individual issues as I'm a collector, but if you want the story itself without spending $4-$6 an issue this is the way to go.

The story and the art are BOTH incredible and there's not a dull moment in the entire run. This is a great jumping on point for the new reader, or for getting back into comics. All your favorite X-Men are there, don't let the fact that it's not called "Uncanny" throw you off, Wolverine is making his wise cracks and Beast is the professor as always.

If this is your first foray into comics I suggest you read "Old Man Logan" after this. After reading these 2 stories I promise you'll be hooked on comics for life.

This book is a must have for any fan of the X-Men. Joss Whedon and John Cassaday are at their creative best in the conclusion to the Astonishing X-Men. This volume picks up right were the second one left off and the action is unrelenting. The only time you get to catch your breathe is when the story is told and the book is done. There are no filler issues in either volumes(which is great). Characters are well fleshed out(which is great) and true to the X-Men I grew up with. Cassaday's art is amazing. I love the character's(life like) facial expressions, especially the looks of shock and surprise. The dialogue feels natural to each character. And I would expect nothing less from Joss Whedon. The story is pretty basic stuff, alien threat, Xavier school under attack, the usual stuff. But it's the art work, dialogue and character development that lift this story to the status of excellence.

I love the stories but can't find the time or money to go back and collect individual issues. This came as a nice glossy TPB that withstood my 2-year old trying to grab it multiple times.

Re: the story, if you haven't read the Joss Whedon ones and you're a classic 80s xmen fan (Days of Future Past, Mutant Massacre) then this is a must read. There are two TPB (this being the second) that have the entire story, end to end. Very worth it.

I bought this for a friend as a gift. He loved it so much. Besides the fact that it was written by Joss Whedon, it went in to the history of the X-men. He would highly recommend this to anyone who is really into X-Men

This storyline has all the classic hallmarks of a Joss Whedon tale. Even though you "know" the characters from other stories, the backstory details and developments mean you don't just get reintroduced, you know them better. Full of action, twists, hurrahs and poinant moments. One caution - do not try to read out of order. The story builds through each episode. Get them all first and then sit back for an "astonishing" read.

This is the fricken best comic ever. Everything about this comic is amazing. The art is astounding, the dialog is beautifully written, and the story as stated before... is amazing. By the end of this book I swear you will love each and every character like you family members. So baisically, if you are a Marvel fan... read this and the previous volume, or you might as well take you "Super Hero Loving Card" and throw it out the door.
