I am an old collector of the X-men since the days of Claremont and Cockrum. I actually pulled from the old spinner racks all the issues of Claremont/Byrne and I actually read X-Men 135 during my social studies class in high school. Why do I mention any of this? It's because the Astonishing X-Men made me feel like I did when I read those books before. These are excellent books and definitely worth the investment and time.

I have to agree with "Zip" Kincaide and Mike Hunt here. This first story arc by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday takes me back to the X-Men of the mid-1980s, and reminds me a lot of exactly why I quit collecting the books then. It's like a rehash of Claremont in his decline ( after the glorious run with Byrne and a slight revival with Paul Smith ) only with a John Bolton "draw-alike" ( remember the secondary stories in the "Classic X-Men", when you could only imagine how good the X-Men would have been had John Bolton taken over the art chores instead of Johnny Romita Jr. ) in John Cassaday. The artwork is good ( if you like the photo realistic, but "static" and "cold" look -- my one complaint is that his backgrounds are dull ) and makes the story-telling tolerable ( I enjoyed Cassaday's tribute to Smith in one of the panels of the first issue where Kitty Pryde is reminiscing, and of course the excellent splash page where Colossus throws Wolverine up in the "fastball" special in the last issue), but I found the entire arc a bit underwhelming. It's hard to appreciate a villain like Ord, when he reminds you so much of one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on steroids ( couldn't they have come up with a cooler design ? ), or any of the dialog, when it consists of sniping and in-fighting between Logan and Scott, and Logan and Hank, and Kitty and Emma ( the kind of filler which Claremont used to rely on when running out of ideas ). The Mutant Cure story-line itself loses steam when you have to bring in aliens and SHIELD and SWORD into the mix. And bringing back Colossus ? Though he is one of my favorite X-Men, I find this to be a troubling double-standard: Morrison can't have Colossus in his New X-Men run, but Whedon can? Really, it makes you wonder if the Whedon-Cassaday run could get this many accolades -- how much more praise Morrison's run on new X-Men would have generated if only Quitely had pencilled all the issues!

Great art and writing, and excellent team dynamics, make this an awesome X-Men book. And Colossus is back from the dead! Recommended for Joss Whedon fans and X-Men fans.

Whedon has crafted a marvelous story here(OMG i so did not meen that pun) While in true Whedon style he makes refrences to important events of years past in a sometimes funny manner. It is done in such a way that it makes this comic perfect for those wishing to get into the X universe for the first time. The story it's self if something far deeper then what one might expect from a comic about brightly colored super hero's. For this it is a pure joy to read. Whedon's trade mark dialoge is ever present and fan's of Buffy, Angel and his pervious comic outing Fray will feel right at home.

Unfamiliar with Joss Whedon, I bought this based on some excellent reviews and enjoyed it. Whedon creates a new X-Men lineup of Cyclops, Emma Frost, Wolverine, Beast and Kitty Pryde and also reincarnates an old member. The artwork is among the best I've ever seen for an X-book. While it's only been six issues, this is probably my favorite current Marvel series.

I bought this book (volume 1) and the same day I got it I ordered volumes 2, 3, and 4!
This is a great, fun story that will have you reading from beginning to end in one sitting. It has drama, action, romance, thoughtfulness, funny moments, and a great story.
If you want to buy the whole story, be aware that although there are 5 or 6 volumes of "Astonishing X-Men", only volumes 1-4 cover the whole story. The volumes that come after are from different authors.
I highly recommend this title for both casual and die-hard graphic novel fans.
Be aware, however, that it's not "ground-breaking". It's a typical X-Men story, but a very good one.
