About the authors

Julie Frost grew up an Army brat, traveling the globe. She thought she might settle down after she finished school, but then she married a pilot and moved six times in seven years. She's finally put down roots in Utah with her family--her husband and son, a herd of guinea pigs, and a "kitten" who thinks she's a warrior princess--and a collection of anteaters and Oaxacan carvings, some of which intersect. She enjoys birding and nature photography, which also intersect, and managed to photograph 500 bird species in the US in 2023. Utilizing her degree in biology, she writes werewolf fiction while completely ignoring the physics of a protagonist who triples in mass. She also writes other things, on occasion, as the fancy strikes her.
Her short fiction has appeared in Weird WWIV, Straight Outta Dodge City, Monster Hunter Files, Galaxy's Edge, Writers of the Future, The District of Wonders, StoryHack, Unlikely Story, Stupefying Stories, and too many anthologies to count. Her novels are available on Amazon, and you can find her on Facebook.

Ben Zwycky is an English ex-pat now living in the Czech Republic. Before, during and after obtaining a master’s degree in chemical engineering, he worked as a hospital porter, research assistant, cleaner and server in a Salvation Army community centre, EFL teacher and currently works as a freelance proofreader and translator together with his Czech wife, who literally fell into his arms in the year 2000 and with whom he now has five children.
He is a founding member and regular contributor to SuperversiveSF, and on the editing staff of Sci Phi Journal.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2018This month's issue was seriously lacking in the number of stories. But that makes it easy to review them one by one, I guess.
Black Gold by Jon Del Arroz - A resource gathering trip turns into a cautionary tale about being careful what you wish for (or bargain away!). This one reminds me a lot of old urban legends and ghost stories (e.g. The Monkey's Paw). It does a good job giving the protagonist some character and setting up some tension, but it is kinda lacking in the atmosphere department. Would rate this story 5 or 6/10.
Too Much for the Whistle by Julie Frost - continuation of a story about a black ops cyborg lycanthrope gone rogue from last issue. Kinda love the idea, but it's a little too mopey for my tastes. 4/10
Stranded by Ben Zwycky - I quite liked this. I think it's rather rare to come across military sci-fi in poetic form. And the verses actually rhyme and form a cohesive story. It's not The Raven but... 8/10
In the Seraglio of the Sheik of Mars by Ben Wheeler - this set of chapters started off a little shakey, but it had a pretty cool fight scene. Not quite as cool as the wedding getting interrupted by a motorcycle chase from earlier chapters, but not bad either. 7/10
Daughter of Sol by Corey McCleery - The continuation of a serial about a literally glowing space princess being escorted by a gruff spaceship captain/soldier. In this episode our protagonist gets training from a space Buddhist in the way of Zen... I mean The Void. It was mildly entertaining. 7/10.
Hard Moon by David Hallquist - Our science experiment gone horribly right of a protagonist continues his escape from the lunar lab. Moves the story forward, and there's some action. 7/10
Here's hoping they get more authors to contribute to the next issue (and perhaps we can get some more chapters of John Wright's Nowither? Maybe?).
