My buddy is a barber and he taught me that using just a little bit of tea tree oil on your razor makes them a) last longer b) prevent razor bumps and c) work as a bit of a moisturizer if you get the right brand. I stole this brand TreeActiv+ Tea Tree Oil Acne Solution for Advanced Acne Treatment - All Natural Acne Spot Treatment - Blemishes Gone or Your Money Back! from my sister, but eventually wore down and bought my own because I like it so much. The tea tree oil works as an antibacterial product, preventing the mini-infections known as ingrown hairs. It also worked well with keeping my face smooth after I had finished shaving. Since the oil worked I also bought the TreeActiv Anti Acne & Rosacea Treatment Sulfur Mask Plus Rhassoul, Bentonite Clay Mask with Witch Hazel & Aloe Vera - Refreshing Lemon Scent (1 Jar) to use as a face scrub, and this essentially got rid of all my skin problems.Read more ›
They come in a nice sleek box that doesn't take up much space and have a perforated opening where you can slide out one little box of 5 blades at a time. Upon inspection they're pretty much the same as the Van Der Hagens. Same size, no defects, and the logo and writing is printed on nicely. However I did immediately notice these Astra blades have a noticeably smaller blade edge than the Van Der Hagen. By that I mean the actual cutting area that is shaped and sharpened by a machine so I was wondering if that would cause the shave to feel different. There is in fact a difference between these two blades so I'm wondering if that is the reason why. I noticed these Astras feel less aggressive than the Van Der Hagens and can take an extra pass or so in some spots to get the grain down to where the Van Der Hagens usually do. I personally prefer the more aggressive feel of the Van Der Hagens because I can better feel the blade cutting against my skin to get an idea of how much I'm cutting down the hairs and how smooth my skin is getting. However I don't have sensitive skin so most people would probably prefer a less aggressive blade.
Luckily the end result with these Astra blades is the exact same, a very close and comfortable shave.Read more ›
Here's how to shave: Think of two possible end results: They are (to use the phrases you see on the forums) a “Baby's Butt Smooth” shave (BBS for short – 3 passes), and a “Socially Acceptable Shave” (SAS – 2 passes).
Are you getting married today? Consider doing a 3-pass BBS. For the other 99% of your life, do a 2-pass SAS shave.
Also (and this will sound like heresy to some): You don't need to use a shaving brush. Why? Because it's wasteful, and not worth the effort.
Most important things to remember:
- Hydrate your facial hair before cutting it. The best time to shave is after a shower – it is believed that human hair is harder to cut than copper of the same width. Hydrating the hair makes it way easier to cut.
- Keep your blade bone-dry between usages. Loosen the razor, dry the blade with a hair dryer, and keep it in another room away from moisture. Corrosion is the biggest factor in blade degradation.
Here is how I shave:
- On damp face, apply a light layer of fragrance-free Lubriderm Daily Moisture Lotion, Fragrance Free lotion (layer 1)
- Wet face with hot water (layer 2)
- With fingers, apply Kiss My Face Moisture Shave, Fragrance Free(layer 3)
- Make first pass. Remind yourself that this first pass is a rough draft.
-- I use a Merkur Long Handled Safety Razor (simple, easy to grip when wet)
-- Astra is my preferred blade, the best balance between sharpness and smoothness that I've found.Read more ›

It could be my technique but this blade does not cut that close. I need several passes for it to get it all close. Read morePublished 1 day ago by NHGUY
My absolute favorite! No tug, no pull, and no irritation! Paired this blade with my 1934 Gillette NEW DeLuxe (15mm) and got a shave that is beyond BBS. Read morePublished 2 days ago by Chris
