Bought this tool after reading the review here. I'm building a kit car and need to set a few dozen rivnuts into the chassis for mounting of brackets and other accessories. The tool does the job very well. Compared to the manual threaded rivnut tools, this works much faster and the fact that it sets most of the standard metric rivnuts makes it a rare tool. Last positive is the low cost. It rivals manual threaded tools in price and is almost as easy to use a hydraulic setter.

EDIT 2013-08-03: I snapped the M6 stud in the kit. My fault for over stressing it. The tool has been out of warranty for a few months when I contacted Astro Tools wanting to purchase a replacement stud. They sent it free of charge, I didn't even have to pay for shipping! I would give this product 6 stars for customer service.

I own (at least four) different styles of rivet nut setters for setting various size ranges of rivet nuts (and similar products) in metric and imperial. I have to say that overall, this is my favorite product of them by far and it was also one of the least expensive. If you want to set M5, M6 or M8 (and, I would presume M10 and M12, but I do not use anything above M8) rivet nuts, including the ones made of stainless steel, this tool is for you.

I am not a strong man (physically) by any means, yet I have absolutely no problem operating this device by myself. It was also the easiest of all my models to figure out proper operation. Unlike hand-plier style setters designed for smaller rivet nuts, there is no dial to adjust to control torque -- just roll the nut on and make sure just a bit of the mandrel comes out the end and that the nut is flush -- and you have it about correct.

Not had any problems with this. Wish smaller ones were this easy to install stainless rivnuts with!

I bought this item a long time ago. One day needed to fasten an m5 screw on my car. When i took the m5 adapter to insert the rivet nut the m5 did not fit in the tool. the external diameter was much smaller than the m6 or m8.
I now have to find another m5 adapter with the same external diameter size as the m8 to screw it on the tool.

I am no mechanic and I have no experience with any other rivet nut tools. I bought this one based on price and other reviews. The price is cheaper than any other tool in its class. Sure you can pick up the manual split block type of rivet nut tool for 20 dollars and use a screwdriver, but this is faster and easier. I used it this weekend and set some stainless rivet nuts in my car door to mount a mirror to. All I can say is, wow! After drilling the hole they were installed in seconds and are quite sturdy. As another poster said this isn't a cheap looking or cheap feeling tool. It isn't snap-on, but it isn't harbor freight either. I would recommend this item to a friend although they'll probably just borrow it from me. All that said the only drawback is no instructions were included, but if you're already looking for one of these tools you'll be able to figure it out pretty quickly.

This thing is a turd. Barely enough leverage to install an M8 insert. I don't know how on earth they expect someone with a normal amount of upper body strength to install an M10 or an M12 insert.

It is also inherently difficult to use as once you set the insert you have to spin the mandrel out using the plastic knob between the handles. As the mandrel backs out of the insert, the handles close in on the knob and interfere with your hand as you are trying to spin it.

I had 30 M8 inserts to set and the tool suffered a complete meltdown on hole #28. I was able to set 1 more insert before the tool was completely unuseable leaving me to set the final remaning insert with a bolt/nut

My heart is filled with regret for purchasing such a low quality tool.

Poorly designed and manufactured tool. The kit came with no instructions as to the use and proper adjustment whatsoever. Does the vendor think all users are born with an innate knowledge as to the use of a Rivnut setting tool? The first thing I discovered is the the adjustment knob has a perfectly smooth cylindrical bore into which the perfectly cylindrical end of the adjustment nut is pressed and lacks any anti-rotation feature at all. The result is that the knob almost immediately starts slipping on the nut and no adjustment is possible. Discarding the useless molded plastic knob I adjusted the nut with a wrench directly (it does have wrench flats on another section of the part). I was able to successfully set an M6 rivet nut, which only requires a relatively small amount of force. The next project involved installing M12 rivet nuts. When the tool is adjusted for this size there is about 6 - 7mm (apx. 1/4") of engagement between the adjustment nut and the back end of the pull bar, which should be sufficient for the fine threads used. After setting three M12's the threads on the pull bar stripped out of the adjustment nut. Because I was applying a lot of force to set the large nut the tool slipped and the handles struck me in the forehead, leaving a bruise. The adjustment nut threads were undamaged, which means it could be used with other, undamaged, pull bars for the other sizes but never again an M12. Needless to say the tool was returned to Amazon for a refund.
