The cable looks and feels well built, and works great with my Ubiquiti EdgeRouter Lite (ERLite-3) router, but should work with any Ubiquiti routers. To connect to it using a Macbook / macOS:

1. Plug the Asunflower Ftdi USB to Serial / Rs232 Console Rollover Cable for Cisco Routers - Rj45 into the USB port on the Macbook on one end, and the other end into the router's Console port.

2. Open the "terminal" app on the Macbook to get a shell prompt.

3. Look in the "/dev" directory to find the device name for the Asunflower USB to Serial Console cable. The command is:

ls -l /dev/tty.usbserial*

4. Find the device name of the Asunflower. It will have a name starting with "tty.usbserial", followed by a bunch of numbers and letters. For example, "/dev/tty.usbserial-FD12BE41".

5. Make sure the router is powered on.

6. Use the "screen" tool to connect to the router. The command is:

screen /dev/tty.usbserial-FD12BE41 115200,cs8

Make sure to replace "/dev/tty.usbserial-FD12BE41" with the actual device name you found in Step #4.

7. At first nothing will happen, but push Enter or Return, and you should get the UBNT login prompt.

8. The default admin user name and password are both "ubnt".

9. To exit the session, press Ctrl+A, then Ctrl+K, then press "y" to confirm and exit back to your shell terminal.

And there you have it!

Fake/Counterfeit or defective

I just received this cable a couple of days ago and I couldn't get it to work. I tried it on 3 different computers, running Win10 and Win7. No drivers needed. The device was properly recognized and displayed a com port in Device Manager. BUT, it would never connect to the Brocade switch I was trying to console in to. It has been reported that a lot of the chips used in these cables are counterfeit - there is even a warning on this web page from the seller. I ended up ordering a very similar cable from Amazon "Cisco Compatible Console Cable" that looks virtually identical and it worked fine. This was before I found out about the fake chips and was told to avoid this issue, get a cable with the "Prolific" chip - a couple of bucks more and now worries

I work for Cisco, and with every Cisco product we get internally, we get one of the standard serial to rj45 cables. We have MOUNTAINS of them and they're prettymuch plain worthless since almost no laptops or other computers come with serial anymore.

This is what Cisco should be shipping with their routers / switches. Really, nobody wants to use (or has) actual serial ports anymore.

It took me a bit to find the right drivers, but once installed- this worked like a charm. I had been keeping around a 10 year old laptop which runs XP since it has an actual serial port. No need to keep around ancient hardware anymore just to use serial! Sure, I could have used an adapter to USB, but I havn't had great luck with those adapters. This cable does it all and no flakiness.

This works great to connect my Windows 7 laptop to a Cisco router console port. It did download and install drivers. I noted that the installation of the drivers put my device on Com 6. I then told Putty to use that port. After that, I was able to use Putty to connect without trouble. So no problems to fight, it just works.

Edit: I just bought another, as I left my old on a work site. These are great. They make it simple to Putty to the console of Cisco and other equipment that offers a RJ45 connection to the console. I am now running Windows 8.1. For whatever reason, the comm port keeps moving, so I have to check in Device Manager from time to time to find the current comm port number. But beyond that, this thing connects every time.

Nice cheap all in one USB to Serial console cable, worked good for my MikroTik router/switch, should work on "Cisco" compatible serial ports also. I used PuTTy on windows and set the baud rate to 115200. In the past I had a USB to D9 then back through a Cisco serial cable I had a bunch of when doing internet installations, but this cable is much easier to use no drivers needed and it's the right length and not too bulky to drop in your laptop bag for going on site. I could also see using this for other projects such as Arduino or Raspberry Pi setups with a easy RJ-45 connection to send commands through this cable, just some ideas.

Plug and play on Ubuntu 12.04 to configure a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter and a USG.

(For those using Linux: set 115K speed in minicom and run dmesg to find the name of your USB port after you plug in the cable. You can set parameters in minicom by runing "sudo minicom -s". Don't forget to "save as dfl" the setup dialog in minicom if you want the parameters to stick.)

Price was excellent.
Worked great, much better than the standard USB dongles with a serial end. I had one of those at work and it would just drop the serial connection for no reason, ended up having to buy a full on PCIe serial add-in card for my workstation. Wish I had found this product earlier.

Theoretically this cable can be extended with a straight RJ45 female-female coupler; but I have not tried it yet. Will also try extending the USB side with extension cable and USB HUB.

Previous experience.... Extension with a serial card > standard blue CISCO serial > COUPLER > 50FT Cat5 > Switch.

Tested using an old Asus G73JH on Windows 10 Pro and Putty. Did not need to hunt for any drivers; not sure it installed any, could have just been really quick or had drivers installed from previous serial dongles. Be sure to check COM Port, especially after reboot... I am sure there is a way to set it static but I have never bothered to search for a solution.
