My guess is that when these computers go back to the manufacturer to be refurbished, some entry level tech guy with a GED cracks the hood open, makes sure everything is in there, closes it, and ships it back out. I'll give ASUS that, everything was in there. Only, as both other reviewers mentioned, nothing is connected. Here's the catch 22: open up the box, void the warranty for what might already be crappy parts. I received my first order a mere 5 days after ordering it (they said it'd be 2-3 weeks, which i was ok with). I think it got here so quickly because somebody Chuck Norris style roundhouse kicked it here. When it arrived, parts were jingling around like it was a maraca, and SURPRISE! It wouldn't turn on... didn't recognize the hard drive. I called ASUS, they laughed at me, so I called Amazon, and they were great, they sent me a new one within a week (still within the original 2-3 weeks it was supposed to take).
Let's go through the SECOND machine on a part by part basis, knowing that the first one couldn't even get past the BIOS...
Processor - outstanding, cruises along without a hiccup, very quiet
RAM - 8gb? who doesn't love that. Multitask all day
Hard Drive - with a Terabyte of space, I can store videos of my cats playing until I'm blue in the face.
DVD-RW - What DVD-RW?Read more ›
The SATA power to the DVD reader was unplugged, an easy fix. All cables and hardware (memory was plugged in properly) were in the box, but not fully seated and/or connected. The only "part" missing was the restore cd. The envelope was in the box, but the cd obviously escaped through one of several openings in the box.
DO NOT BUY this PC if you aren't tech-savvy with computers.
If you're like many of us and plan to add additional hard-drives and a better graphics card, you're going to open the box regardless. In that case, this is an EXCELLENT opportunity, because you can't purchase the individual components for this ($559) price.
I added an nVidia GeForce 9500 GT 1gb video card (PCI Express 2.0), a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-1800 tv/radio card (PCIe), and two additional SATA hard-drives (needed a set of rails for one of the drives.) [One available 3.5" drive bay and one 5" drive bay are available for your use inside the case.] I plan to add a fire wire card, as well, then I'll be ready for my video editing play. :)
Overall, I recommend this purchase, but again, ONLY if you're comfortable working on the motherboard/in the case. (See photo uploaded.)
Awesome, powerful -> very fast machine. Tons of everything a serious user would want.
Only problem I experienced writing some old CD-RWs from the old driver used with the DVD/CD writer and downloading an open-source, third party software burner which eliminated the problem and was the same work-around the ASUS tech support came up with since Windows 7 (64 bit) is relatively new.
Otherwise I love it!
