Came as advertised with OS 4.4. MANY updates (and hours) later, it was updated to OS 5.1.1 (they forced - no option to stop them). These updates rendered it slow with constant freeze ups and random reboots. Did a factory reset which helped some but it still would just reboot while sitting on the counter. It went thru a whole app initialization on every reboot with the only fix being to not reboot it while plugged in... Seller was very responsive but their "fix" was to roll it back to an earlier OS. It should work with the most current OS without tricks and work-arounds. I returned it and bought another "no-name" brand that came with 5.1.1 out of the box. Turned it on, installed my apps, and it has run perfectly.

Google Galaxy Nexus Cell Phone... With a 7 Inch Screen! But no TRRS jack???

Well lets put this simple, you get all the great things of the Galaxy Nexus Cell phone but on a 7 inch screen. No cellular connection or LTE data but that is quickly solved with a tether to your Gnex smartphone. This tablet is awesome. I love it because I can use Amazon MP3 Amazon Kindle and Amazon apps and make it a 'Kindle Fire' but also have all my google stuff and a wide open ecosystem. You can't use Amazon Video on here but you can use Netflix or Plex if you maintain your own media library, good luck doing that on a Kindle Fire. The Kindle Fire HD and this device battle each other but this device beats the Fire in terms of apps and build longevity. This device has been around longer and there have been several hardware revision.

The software is lovely, the screen is wonderful for displaying eye candy. movies on it are wonderful, photos are awesome and gaming on this device with the Tegra 3 Quad core, awesome!

Only reason i dock one star is because Google cut corners with ASUS by not including a TRRS jack, for gods sake its a NEXUS and every NEXUS i have had had a TRRS jack allowing me to control it using a headset and use an external microphone. Not this one. Hardware build quality is solid but the lack of a TRRS jack knocks half a star off my review, what kind of device is built without a TRRS jack, what did they do, save 45 cents per unit by not putting a TRRS jack in it? I'd have gladly paid an extra 5 dollars to have a TRRS jack in it!

Nexus 7 hits the mark with a few quirks

First off, for the price, the Nexus 7 is an excellent tablet. Fits perfectly and comfortably in the hand and the non-slip back is superb. The high definition screen is also a joy and is super-crisp with vivid colour. The use of the latest Jelly Bean Android system really puts this table on par with the best of the rest in tablets (and that includes iPad) in terms of slickness, responsiveness and overall look and feel. In many ways, it goes further than Apple's iPad capabilities in supporting multiple users, each with their own profiles and offering much easier access to core functions like wireless control and settings, it's very well thought out. This is a masterstroke for parents who go crazy when their four year olds rearranges all the app icons!

There are however, some negatives, but these have to be factored in the context of the low price and I don't consider them real deal killers at all...

- There's no expansion capability in the form of SD slots or such. This would really require one to purchase the 16GB or 32GB model, but again, these are still cheap by comparison to the best of the rest.
- It is prone to crash on some apps. For example, if you change your passwords externally to the device you'll get a lot of "Application has unexpectedly stopped" errors and you'll have to clear your app data/cache and restart. This is MOST annoying.
- Multiple users each have their own app space. If I install Skype for my kid and then I want it in my profile, I have to install it again. It'd be far better to support a single app instance and store user data in each users profile. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but I can't seem to figure this out!

Can't fault it beyond that, it's a worthy purchase, but get the model with additional memory, particularly if you'll make use of the multi-user capabilities.

More than 3 months later, I finally get some time to write this small review:

Until now, I was not a heavy tablet user. I played with iPads and cheap Android tablets at the office, but never owned one for more than a week. Now that I have this, I'm absolutely amazed about how great is this gadget.

PROS:

- SIZE: My favourite feature is it's size. The Nexus 7 has just the right size that a tablelt should have. Small and light enough to easily carry it and use it with one hand, but with a screen size larger enough to comfortably watch a video. I can't imagine using a 10-inch tablet for more than a couple of hours (my girlfriend has a 10-inch Asus Transformer TF300T). I carry this with me the whole day, no matter where I am. Basically I do many tasks here, from emailing, regularly browsing sites, taking notes on meetings, social media updates, watching videos, playing games, and so on... but mostly I read A LOT: on the bus or bed. The size of this device makes reading a dream.

- FAST: The Nexus 7 works just perfect on any app I've installed, including heavy 3D games. The texts renders fast after pinch and the screen it's very responsive doing any task.

- OS: One of the best features is that the Nexus 7 provides a "pure" Android, which means: it does not comes with an ugly modified user interface and does not include any junk apps that you can't uninstall later (like the ones that Samsung or Asus put on most its devices). This tablet comes just with the plain and latest Android OS, with fresh updates and just the basic apps you need, so you can customize it as you wish.

- BATTERY: Since I bought it, I've been using it from morning til night and I've never ended up with a dead battery. I charge it every night but I could easily could use it for 2 days. And the battery fully charges in just a couple of hours.

- PRICE: I think this is one of the most cheapest 7-inch tablet on the market and it's worth every penny. Don't even think on purchasing a cheap generic tablet just to save a few bucks.

- BONUS: Screen sleep/awake function with magnets: if you buy a case, make sure to get one with those magnets (like the MoKo Slim-fit Case). Light sensor: pretty good auto screen brightness with the light sensor.

CONS:

- Power Cable: it's just too short. If you can't live with that, just replace it with a larger cable (which is a standard USB to Micro-USB). I haven't changed it.

- Lack of rear camera: I understand the reason why this device does not have a rear camera (basically, to keep a low price) but I would really like to have a rear camera so I could normally take some pictures. I almost never videochat from the tablet, so it's a wasted camera for me.

- Bevels: although the back material has a great surface, the side bevels are not too great or they have not been perfectly assembled. It's just a minor issue, but this kind of things shouldn't happen on a top quality product. But, as I said, it's really a minor issue and maybe you even won't notice it.

- 3G: I can live without mobile data connection. When I'm on the street, I just turn on the thethering from my cheap Android phone, but it would be great if the Nexus 7 have 3G (again, same as the rear camera, the price would be higher).

- Speakers: ok, but not great (at least compared to my girlfriend's Asus TF300T, which sounds in fact really loud and clear).
