This fits the bill perfectly. I was able to load the few programs I use and documents and still have a great deal of space left, which was my concern on the ultra-books.
Speed? you lift the screen and the unit is on and running. Programs run fast and smooth.
The other review talking about the track pad was correct, however they updated the software for the unit and its totally fixed. In fact right when it updates the first time its powers on this is fixed.
The only difficult section is getting used to the quick gestures that Windows 8 uses to move between programs, scan up and down a page etc. But once you figure them out its pretty quick and intuitive.
Overall this was a great purchase. I have had it for 3 weeks and love it.
1) Sound is not very good. And surfing the web and listening to streaming at the same time is not possible. Sound distorts significantly as web pages download.
2) Trackpad has an awful feel. I have to use it with a mouse because of its low quality (I tried my daughter's MacAir trackpad and it is so much better.
For the rest, the notebook is nice, well finished, it accomplishes what it promises. But sound + trackpad are too significant issues to let them go. Buy it only if you get it a huge discount because at full price I imagine you have much better options out there.
As I said, ASUS quality-price was very good. Not anymore in my experience with this notebook.
Adding this on Nov 10, 2014. A few days ago, my ASUS charger began to work erratically with the light indicating charging working only on strange positions less and less I am ordering a replacement.
Previously, I had to reformat my notebook and ASUS support was awful and pre-packaged software useless.
Finally, wireless began to work unreliable and I have to turn it off frequently to recover connection.
All in, this review should have only one or two stars and be titled: "Several problems"
The original conclusion that the ASUS quality-price offer was good but not anymore is now reinforce.
Not sure if I give ASUS a third chance.
It's an ultrabook, which means that you will have to accept some compromises in order to enjoy the small profile. It doesn't have the separate graphics board that would make it a gamer machine, for example. You give that up for size, heat, and battery life. There are only two USB slots, although they are USB 3.0, which is very nice. The HDMI slot is a micro. However, ASUS included a little pouch with a VGA and a RJ-45/USB adapter. Nice detail, and it made all the difference.
Lovely keyboard, full-sized with good key separation. The feel is soft, as you'd expect from a high-end lappy, the keys firm and the travel consistent. Very comfortable for a touch typist. I will say that most touch typists have the Delete key hard-wired into their brains, which may be a little hazardous with this keyboard layout because upper right is also where the power button is. Haven't hit it by mistake yet, though. Battery life has exceeded specs so far.
It's very quiet. I haven't experienced any heat issues yet and it's had some hard use. The sound is stunning - it drives my Sennheisers just a little too well - I travel with earbuds and they're good, but not the same. B&O did a very good job.
Mine came with Win8, which was not going to stay on the machine no matter what. The free upgrade to 8.1 made a huge improvement in usability. Win7 users, expect a learning curve.
Overall, completely delighted. Throw this on a large monitor with a bluetooth mouse and you really do have a decent desktop replacement. On the road it's all you need. Oh, and I almost forgot - it's fast. Really fast.
The power connector started getting loose on the unit and that and the keyboard needed to be sent back to Asus for repair.
I also had problems and still do have problems with Wifi on this unit. The ASUS provided drivers would disconnect after about 1 or 2 minutes. Downloaded Intel driver and with worked better (longer periods), but the Wifi support is horrible and painful to deal with. This appears to be a problem with Windows 8 and Microsoft and Asus do not seem interested in solving the problem.
I have also had issues with the video drivers. Apparently you are stuck with old drivers unless you figure out how to go to Nvidia and download the drivers yourself (they are not auto detected).
For the money it is a good unit, but I really wish it was available with Windows 7 instead. Windows 8 really makes this machine painful to use.
