I love the 3d effect when watching 3D movies on my PS3 and gaming on my PC. Several reviews mention concern about color accuracy when used in 2d mode. I could see no evidence of this personally, but you can independently adjust the video settings for 2d and 3d mode. You just have to play around with the settings to find what works for you. Using the under monitor controls to adjust the set are a pain. As much as this costs, I can't understand why a more user friendly remote control couldn't have been implemented.
As good as this monitor is, it is still unfortunately a flawed implentation of 3d. Objects that are near or far from the screen have faint ghosting(cross-talk) issues unless you turn the contrast way down. This unfortunately renders the overall image too dark so I just leave it around 75. It is strange that in between objects don't suffer from this issue. It could be a processing bug within the monitor itself since this applies to both bluray and PC rendered 3d. The other flaw is there is a checker board effect on anything not rendered at the screen plane. It creates the appearance that you are only getting half HD instead of the full HD that Asus claims defeating the point of going with active shutter over passive. It is mostly noticeable on objects/surfaces that are bright. Just do a google search on this and you will find several forums complaining about it. Asus doesn't appear willing to acknowledge this issue. The result is more issues with aliasing. It is clear 3d display technology is still not fully developed and needs more time to mature. I only took one star off because you do get used to these minor issues over time.
I originally purchased a so called like new version of this from Amazon Warehouse Deals in an attempt to save some money. That didn't work out well since the IR emitter on the display was non functional. I guess they don't really check them out for functionality like they claim. Caveat emptor.
I had an LG W3000H 30" IPS Monitor (with 2560 x 1600 resolution) and the Asus dominates it - I love the color reproduction that the Asus VG278H creates. Is it a TN Panel? Sure. Do I care about if colors look funky to someone sitting across the room at a 170 degree angle? Heck no. I care about my experience when *I'm* using the monitor at the optimal distance. In this regard, this monitor ROCKS.
I have had no problems with this monitor whatsoever, the blacks are deep and the colors pop. I liked this monitor so much that I bought 2 more, for a total of 3.
I have the monitors set up in a triple monitor 3D Vision surround setup with my PC and I have had zero issues. No backlight problems, no 3D problems, no nothing. I have nothing but the best to say for these monitors. The 3D is GORGEOUS, the colors rock and the 2ms response time, coupled with the 120Hz refresh rate is killer. Text is crisp and very sharp, whites are white and blacks are deep - Windows never felt so smooth and games so lifelike.
The biggest feature of this monitor is the Nvidia Lightboost. HOLY COW. Compared to other monitors without lightboost, it is absolutely in a league of its own. The vividness of the 3D with the bright images is truly something stellar.
I would HIGHLY recommend this monitor to anyone looking for a gaming monitor. I would recommend this monitor even more for anyone looking for a 3D monitor. I would recommend this monitor even MORE for anyone looking for a 3D Vision Surround setup.
I removed the monitor casing from the two side monitor to decrease the bezel size and left the casing on the middle monitor; i then overlapped the center monitor's bezel with the small bezel from the side monitors. This equals a 1cm bezel size between screens. You don't even notice it in 2D and certainly don't notice it in 3D. Will post pictures of my monitor setup at some point, please check the product gallery.
In summary, get this monitor. The new batches seem to be problem free (so far is my experience with 3 of them, all bought from Amazon). No backlight problems, no 3D problems, no problems, at all.
